Where would you mount the hinge?

My guess is above the lenses, so you would cut the padded area and likely compromise the compression of the frame that's integral to keeping the on your face.

I think it would be a shame...

If you are serious, get them scanned and 3d printed. Then you would have a prototype to start with.
