Other than the serial number, whats the difference between gen1/gen4. I have an opportunity to buy a gen1, JB serial, w/blue lens and, I think, gen4 w/ pol fire lens for $300 each. Will these be worth a look...after a 3 hour drive?
Thx...Jeff

The difference between the early polished frames towards the later versions is the level of 'finish'. The early pairs have a more hammered/mottled appearance against a highly polished, bright later frame. You will also find casting marks/pits/imperfections from the sand method compared to the later lost wax sets.
Pics below to show the differences.

Go north my friend, go north!

I was thinking the same thing but wasn't sure if the gen1 was worth the drive and price. Thx

Agree with above, $300 each is too much. $200- $250 sounds better depending on the lenses and bridge. I personally prefer the earlier gen polished frames, I like the rougher hammered looking finish. I hate the shiny later gen polished frames and have a tendency to send those for immediate refinish to something I like better.
