Here's the update bros...

I've bought and sold many things on the internet and as a rule you should never gift the money via paypal, just pay the extra %. And always pay with a real credit card and not a debit with a visa/mc logo on it.

Sounds like you were lucky to get your money back but there are way too many stories of people who gift via paypal and never get anything.

I would agree with Qtrain. Not using the gift option will solve alot of problems. As for the post count it I feel it should be higher. A new person can be in the exchange section with in one hour easily. Plenty of time I have seen people requesting new people to stop getting post counts in their threads. Tends to muck it up. I personally have bought quite a few items from the board members already and everything worked well. Save your self the trouble and not use gift. You are covered through PP. Might take some time but your money will come back.

Great job with the police. Finally a blow to the scumbags.

It's a fine line for sure. Low numbers encourage a bit of post-whoring to get to the level, but a high number makes it pretty discouraging and almost looks like we're not welcoming of new people.

Hearno, glad to see you've got cooperation from local officers/detectives to help resolve everything! If he's a scammer then he's getting what he deserves, but frankly I hope it all works out and no charges are filed.

Why would we need an eBay account?

I sell here so I don't have to pay them. I can understand PayPal, but why both?

Just reiterating what Boss has listed in Rule #5 in the Exchange rules...

5) Because we are not involved in any transactions performed on this site, we can only recommend, a safe way to perform transactions. Our recommendation, is once you have the transaction planned out, have the seller go to Ebay.com, and create a posting for the items for the agreed price. The buyer can than immediately go on and buy the item. This way the buyer and seller are both protected by Ebay. This is just a recommendation of a way to perform safe transaction. You may perform than in any way you see fit.

I love it Hearno, although I think it would have been more fun to hire some thugs and rough them up a bit.

I'm sure everyone on here would have chipped a couple bucks to cover the broken Louisville.

Great work and it's awesome to see someone taking it that extra mile!

Good job man. How were you able to pull all these resources using police and all?
Glad you got your money back man!

This is a lesson too all, DONT MESS WITH HEARNO!

I'm thinking the Mods should powwow and consider ammending the forum exchange rules, again.
- First off, the 10 post minimum before you can exchange is too low, IMHO. This should be higher, enough so that the new member has to be willing to invest some time on the boards before trying to sell/trade/buy anything. Maybe something like 100 posts, to further discourage anyone new from posting BS one liner comments just to build up their post count quicker.

This discussion was taking place before this situation occured and is taking place right now. We are on it. It's just working out the line between ensuring people don't post whore and also being welcoming to new members.

- Second, maybe there should be a requirement made for both parties when selling/buying/trading, which makes it imperative for each party to post the final details of their transaction on the original thread or in a deal thread. This way, all information is posted publicly and will hopefully further discourage any scams or bad intent. PM's for personal info would still be the norm.
- And third, all members wishing to participate in the Exchange, should be required to have an eBay AND PayPal account. Transactions on the boards should utilize either/both and pay the fees accordingly, for all of our safeties and peace of mind. Anyone without BOTH accounts shouldn't be allowed to sell/buy or trade on the boards. I understand that this may be hard to enforce, but after all the recent incidents it may be a step in the right direction. I also know that Boss has a suggested rule of thumb posted in the Exchange sticky about using eBay and PayPal to finalize a transaction.

We consider ourselves a family here on the boards, but sometimes even family will make mistakes, try to pull a fast one or even screw you. Be responsible, watch out for yourselves and help others whenever possible, and the "family" will only get stronger. Aloha!!!

I'm not sure of the total numbers of transactions that have taken place between board members but I'm sure the success rate far outweighs the scams that goes on. People get scammed on eBay too, even with the policies they have in place, no system is fool proof. How members choose to do business with other members is up to them, the forum can't be held accountable for their actions. It's sad that it happens but I don't think we should lock everything down or make demands of members that are not really enforceable or necessary. If you choose to use the gift payment option you choose to use it, and you know the risks involved.
