Actually, in Strange Days they called it a "squid", it was worn outside of the skull, and it was a form of VR...

A neural lace would be a brain implant that interfaces you with computers and, ostensibly, the internet... and perhaps other laced individuals?

Side note, however, Forbes' profile on JJ states the following: "RED Digital Camera is about to jump into the world of augmented and virtual reality. Founder and majority owner Jim Jannard won't give details, but promises it's going to be big."

So while he's saying AR and VR aren't going anywhere, it looks like he might be positioning for some kind of combo of the two.
