Sony tried with the PS3 (the original versions had a full PS2 chipset in the case) and it ended up being a horror.

Backwards compatibility is always a nice idea, but it's rarely ever worked well. The PS2 is probably the only GOOD example

I have the original bw compatible PS3 + 2 newer ones. Never had a problem with it, plays all my PS2 and PS3 games with hundreds of hours on it. What was the horror? Maybe I got lucky.
 
There were issues with games not playing correctly, FMV scenes being distored etc. Of course this is the internet and a small minority can make a big stink, especially when fanboyism gets involved.
