How to Tell If Your Sunglasses Are Polarized?
If you’re trying to determine if your sunglasses or lenses are polarized, we’ve got you covered. Plus these tips will work for any brand of sunglasses not just Oakleys.
1. Polarized Lens Sticker
For Oakley’s, Ray-Bans, and many of the big Luxottica brands, you may find a polarized sticker on your lenses when you buy them. If you’ve had your sunglasses a while, there may be no sticker. But instead, you may find a “P” or “Polarized” etched onto the lens. This is a great sign that your lenses are probably polarized.
But if there are no markings or you’re still unsure, you’re not out of luck. There are two options we’ve outlined below that work to determine if any lenses are polarized in less than 30 seconds!
2. Computer Screen Test
The computer screen test is the easiest way to see if your sunglasses are polarized. Simply hold your Sunglasses up to a computer screen, then rotate 90 degrees. If your lenses become dark or you can no longer see through them, they are polarized. If there is no change, your lenses are not polarized.
See the images below showing a positive result of the test.
3. Removable Lens Test
As a backup option or if you don’t have a computer handy, you can also remove the lenses from the sunglasses and perform a similar test. This also works well for replacement lenses before you’ve put them in your sunglasses.
Simply remove your lenses and hold both in front of each other, so that the lenses are parallel and aligned one over the other. Once they’re parallel and lined up simply rotate the first lens 90 degrees.
If your lenses are polarized, when you rotate 90 degrees the lens tint will darken similar to the example above. If they appear to have the same tint and do not darken, the lenses are not polarized.
