Oakley Flight Deck Goggles | Snow Review & Guide

First released in 2014, Oakley Flight Deck goggles are specifically designed for skiing and snowboarding. And with Prizm lens technology these goggles are ready for any mountain!

Oakley Flight Deck Goggles Review

For our review, we tried a pair of Oakley Flight Deck goggles with Prizm Snow Sapphire lenses (Product Link).

We’ve already reviewed the Prizm Snow Sapphire lens, so we won’t go into too much detail here. But we definitely had a great time with these goggles.

Keep reading for our full Flight Deck review.

Goggle Frame and Design

Starting off, the Oakley Flight Deck features a modern rimless frame design inspired by helmet visors of fighter pilots. And thanks to this design, the Flight Deck offers a large field of view that we loved on the mountain.

The frame itself is made with a flexible O Matter chassis that easily conforms to your face when tightened, even in freezing cold.

Plus, the inside of the Flight Deck features a triple-layer moisture-wicking face foam made of polar fleece. And it’s definitely welcomed during those all-day ski or snow sessions.

Between the O Matter frame and frame foam, we found the Flight Deck to be comfortable all day.

Strap and Comfort

But Oakley’s innovation doesn’t stop at the design. They also increased the width of the Flight Deck’s strap to 50mm, plus a silicone lining for added comfort.

This wider strap helps to distribute pressure evenly across your head, and it definitely works. After wearing the Flight Deck for 6+ hours on the mountain, we didn’t have any of the usual head or hair pain.

Overall, the Flight Deck is built for all-day comfort, and it delivers!

Prescription Eyewear Compatibility

If you wear prescription glasses, the Flight Deck has you covered!

That’s thanks to discreet frame notches built into the design that allows you to comfortably wear prescription glasses under the Flight Deck.

From our experience, the notches definitely helped while wearing glasses. Is it still a bit clunky wearing glasses under your goggles? Definitely. But the Flight Deck’s design makes it much more comfortable and tolerable.

Lenses

As we mentioned above, our Flight Deck featured Prizm Snow Sapphire lenses which we loved (full lens review here).

But your lens options don’t stop there.

The Oakley Flight Deck goggles are available in a variety of contrast-enhancing Prizm Snow lenses specifically tuned for snow conditions.

Plus if you’re looking for great colors besides Sapphire, these goggles are also available with Prizm Snow Jade and Prizm Snow Torch Iridium. And all of the lenses are made of Plutonite lens material that meets ANSI Z87.1 impact requirements.

We’ve already covered how Prizm lenses work and the benefits at length, so be sure to check out our complete Prizm guide for more.

And every Flight Deck lens also features an F3 anti-fog coating to prevent fogging during your runs.

But one of the best parts of the Flight Deck is you don’t need to settle on one lens!

Ridgelock Lens Change System

Thanks to the Flight Deck’s Oakley Ridgelock technology you can easily change your lenses on the mountain in seconds.

Essentially Ridgelock is the goggle version of Oakley’s Switchlock technology – the feature that allows easy lens swaps on sunglasses like the Jawbone.

On Oakley’s goggles like the Flight Deck, however, the Ridgelock technology specifically helps to provide a complete lens seal. This avoids any snow or debris from getting in and helps prevent fogging.

Plus you can find the Ridgelock lens change on both the Flight Deck and Flight Deck XM goggles.

Final Thoughts – Our Review and Recommendation

We had a great time skiing with the Oakley Flight Deck all day on the mountain. The rimless lens design not only looks great but also provides fantastic peripheral vision.

But what we loved most about these goggles was the comfort. Between the wide strap and fleece foam, we found the Flight Deck to be easy to wear for hours, even when sweaty.

Overall we’d recommend the Flight Deck for any skiers or snowboarders looking for a large or medium size goggle that’s comfortable all day.

Flight Deck vs. Flight Deck XM Goggles

Oakley sells both a Flight Deck and Flight Deck XM model, and while they’re nearly identical, there is one key difference – size.

Flight Deck goggles are larger than the Flight Deck XM frame, which is a small-to-medium-size goggle.

Since the Flight Deck is the larger of the two, for most men or those with larger heads, it will be your best fit.

But if you feel the Flight Deck is too large or you have a smaller head, take a look at the Flight Deck XM.

Overall the Flight Deck XM is about 5mm smaller in height, width, and length compared to the Flight Deck.

Where to Buy Flight Deck Goggles?

If you’re looking to buy Oakley goggles, including the Flight Deck, it usually makes sense to stop by a local Oakley store or ski/snow shop to try them on. We always prefer to try our goggles on since you want the right fit and comfort for your face size.

But before you buy in-store, make sure you look online. That’s because you can typically save 20-30% off new goggles with only a few minutes of work.

First, you can find big discounts (up to 40%) on goggles during Oakley’s season sales. You can find the full Oakley sales schedule here to see when you can save next.

But if you don’t want to wait for a sale, you still have options.

You can usually save 30%+ on new Oakley products like goggles through aftermarket sites like our Oakley Forum Exchange or eBay. For the complete comparison of options, check out our guide to saving on Oakleys and never paying retail again!
