Frogskins vs. Frogskins Lite? What’s the Difference?

The main difference between original Oakley Frogskins and Frogskins Lite sunglasses is the design.

Oakley Frogskins feature a full-rim design made of lightweight O Matter material. In comparison, Frogskins Lite sunglasses feature a half-rim design designed to give this frame a “lighter” look.

You can see the comparison of these designs in the picture below:

Our Gear

For our review, we wore a pair of Frogskins Lite sunglasses (Product Link) with a Matte Black / Clear frame and Prizm Sapphire lenses.

We scored these during an Oakley sale for 30% off, bringing the total purchase price to $100.08. (We’ll talk more about the different ways to save on these shades further down).

And these shades did not disappoint! Keep reading to find out why these have earned a spot next to our original Frogskins.

Initial Impressions & Design

We’ve worn Oakley Frogskins for close to a decade now, so it’s safe to say we’re fans. Even if Oakley founded, Jim Jannard isn’t.

So we were excited to give the Frogskins Lite a try. And from the minute we got our hands on them, we were impressed.

Like original Frogs, the Frogskins Lite features an O Matter frame that’s lightweight and comfortable. But what really separates them is the design. Frogskins Lite sunglasses feature a half-rim design that not only gives them a “lighter” look but also makes them seem more casual.

And once we tried on the Frogskins Lite, it was easy to see why some people would love this pair. We still are partial to our original Frogskins. But, overall, this is a welcomed update to the Frogskins design that will appeal to the masses.

Prizm Lenses

Our pair of sunglasses feature Prizm Sapphire Lenses, which we’ve already reviewed (linked above), so we won’t go into too much detail here. But the short answer is they rock!

From a design perspective, Prizm Sapphire gave our Frogskins a great pop of blue color that added a fun element to this frame. We got three compliments on our first day wearing this frame, and each one mentioned how great the lenses looked!

And thanks to Oakley’s Prizm Lens technology, these lenses do a lot more than just look good. Prizm Lenses offer contrast and color enhancing technology, plus glare reduction. And this innovation is combined with Oakley High Definition Optics (HDO) to provide crystal clear vision and clarity.

We’d recommend fun Oakley lenses like Prizm Sapphire or Prizm Jade if you’re looking to make a statement. Otherwise, you can opt for Prizm Black or Grey for a more classic look! Either way, you can’t go wrong.

Size and Dimensions

Oakley Frogskins Lite sunglasses are a medium-sized frame that looks best on square, rectangular and oval face shapes. But thanks to their lightweight look, this frame will look great on almost any frame shape, including large faces.

Overall, the Frogskins Lite are a similar size to the original Frogskins, with slightly wider lenses (but it’s not really noticeable).

We’ve included the complete dimensions below for reference:

  • Frame Width: 131.7mm
  • Lens Width: 63.2mm
  • Lens Height: 48.2mm
  • Bridge: 10mm
  • Temple Length: 138mm

Final Thoughts – Are They Worth It?

Yes, Oakley Frogskins Lite sunglasses are absolutely worth it if you’re looking for a clean, classic pair of shades!

We were honestly surprised by how much we loved this frame. Going in, we weren’t sure why you’d ever change the classic Frogskins design. But the updated sleeker design of the Frogskins Lite will definitely appeal to a wider audience who wants a less bulky frame.

In the weeks since our initial review, this frame has become an easy go-to pair of sunglasses for us when we’re heading out of the house.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where to Buy Oakley Frogskins Lite?

You can buy Oakley Frogskins Lite sunglasses directly from Oakley (Product Link) or retail stores that carry Oakley sunglasses.

As we mentioned above, we saved 30% on our Frogskins Lite review pair during an Oakley sale. And you can too. These sales typically run several times a year, with savings of 30-50% on select pairs.

But if you don’t want to wait for a sale, you still have options. You can find Oakleys for up to 50% off retail prices through aftermarket sites like eBay or our Oakley Forum Exchange. For more information on how to never pay retail again, check out our Cheap Oakley Sunglasses Buying Guide.

Are Oakley Frogskins Lite Polarized?

Oakley Frogskins Lite sunglasses are available with polarized lenses, but not all pairs feature them. When buying, you’ll want to look for pairs with “Prizm Polarized” lenses, which means they’re polarized.

These lenses combine Oakley’s contrast-enhancing Prizm technology with the protection of a Polarized lens coating.

For older pairs or non-Prizm lenses, look for HDPolarized lenses. This is Oakley’s name for their standard polarized lenses.

Do Oakley Frogskins Lenses Fit in Frogskins Lite?

No, Oakley Frogskins lenses will not fit in Frogskins Lite sunglasses. That’s because the lenses have different dimensions, with Frogskins Lite lenses being slightly wider (about 10mm).

Are Oakley Frogskins Lite Replacement Lenses Available?

Yes, Oakley Frogskins Lite replacement lenses are available through Oakley (Product Link) starting at $65.00 per pair. And these Oakley lenses meet the same performance and impact standards as those that come with your sunglasses.

But if you’re looking to save, you still have options. You can also find replacement Frogskins lite lenses from several aftermarket lens manufacturers. These companies are not associated with Oakley but create lenses to fit specific Oakley models. And they can cost a fraction of Oakley lenses.
