We review everything to know about the Oakley Gascan Sunglasses and why they’re one of the most popular frames sold!
Table of Contents
Background and History
The Oakley Gascan Sunglasses were released to the market in 2005. Since they have become a top-selling Oakley frame. The classic design and 100+ colorways over its lifespan have made this frame one of the most popular sunglasses on the market today. Starting around $100, they are also one of Oakley’s most affordable sunglasses in the United States.
The squared edges and straight lines of the Oakley Gascan contrast other popular frames on the market, such as RayBan Wayfarers. They feature lightweight O Matter frames with Twin Toric HDO lenses for enhanced optics.
It should come as no surprise to loyalists that Oakley looks to go against the grain, self-describing the sunglasses:
” We traded soft curves for straight edges and hard lines to sculpt our very first high-wrap lifestyle shades. The toric lens design became known as Gascan™.”

Oakley Gascan Review
Gascans are one of the most simple, easy-going, and affordable pairs of Oakleys on the market today. It’s no wonder why many O fans have started their collections with an everyday pair of this frame before moving on to cult classics like the Juliets.
We got our hands on a pair of Gascans in Matte Black with Grey lenses. This is one of the most popular colorways because of its simplicity and versatility. Now let’s jump into our review.
Frame and Design
First, this frame fits effortlessly on your face, and the squared designs will complement almost any head shape. The O Matter frame is durable and lightweight, making it perfect for everyday wear.
We found the Gascan to have a very comfortable fit thanks to its lightweight design. However, you won’t find Unobtainium earsocks or nosepads on the Gascan like some of Oakley’s top sports pairs. Still, we didn’t have any issues with the fit.
Low Bridge vs. High Bridge Fit
Today, the Gascan, by default, features Oakley’s high bridge fit, which is designed for people with a high nose bridge and lower cheekbones. In comparison, Oakley also offers the Gascan in Low Bridge Fit (previously known as Asian Fit) for people with higher cheekbones and flatter noses.
For most people, including us, the standard fit should be fine, but if you find your glasses slipping off the bridge of your nose, try the Low Bridge Fit model.
Lenses
The Oakley Gascan features two rectangular lenses made of impact-resistant Plutonite. This is the standard material for Oakley lenses and helps protect your eyes while filtering out harmful UVA, UVB, and UVC rays.
We found the Gascan to have pretty good coverage for a performance lifestyle frame. While there were definitely pockets of light coming in from the sides at times, the glare wasn’t overly noticeable. But, if you’re looking for maximum coverage, you’re better off trying a full sports model like the Kato, or Radar.
While the Gascan we reviewed features standard Grey lenses, the frame is also available with contrast-enhancing Prizm technology. Almost all Oakleys have transitioned completely to Prizm lenses, so it’s pretty interesting to see the Gascan still available with standard options.
Prizm originally started as a sport-specific innovation, but now Oakley has introduced the lenses for everyday wear. That means whether you’re driving, walking, or hiking, you’ll be able to see clearly and spot any hazards. Be sure to check out our complete guide to Oakley Prizm lenses for more information.
Size and Fit
The Gascan is a medium size frame that fits most people pretty well. We’ve included the dimensions below for reference:
- Frame Width: 131mm
- Lens Width: 60mm
- Lens Height: 35mm
- Bridge: 15mm
- Temple Length: 127mm

Our Review – Do We Recommend Gascan Sunglasses?
We’ve worn Oakley Gascans consistently over the past few years, and our review revealed most of what we already knew. This is one of the most versatile pairs of Oakleys and is a good choice for anyone wanting a pair of sunglasses that blend in. You can wear these sunglasses from the golf course to a wedding without looking out of place.
That being said, it’s an interesting relationship for many of us Oakley fanatics as they don’t represent the truly disruptive design that Oakley embodied in its early years under Jim Jannard. They’re simple. If you’re looking for a simple everyday pair that blends, look no further. If you’re looking to truly make a statement and disrupt, you’ll want to look at other Oakleys like the Clifden or Over The Top!

Are Oakley Gascans Safety Glasses?
While Oakley Gascan lenses are made of impact-resistant Plutonite material that surpasses ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses standards, that doesn’t mean they qualify as safety glasses.
In order to be worn as safety glasses, both the lenses and frame need to be stamped with ANSI certifications. Read more in our guide to Oakley safety glasses, including which models qualify.
Can Gascans be Customized?
Yes, the Oakley Gascan sunglasses are a part of the Oakley Custom program, which allows you to personalize every detail of your sunglasses. You don’t have to settle for just Polished Black frames.
Currently, Oakley offers 8 frame options, 15 lens options, and 9 icon colors meaning there are 1080 combinations for you to pick from! And this doesn’t include text etching or NFL/MLB team logos that you can also add!
Where Can You Buy Oakley Gascans?
If you’re looking to just pay retail, the obvious choice is Oakley.com or SunglassHut. However, for popular pairs like the Gascan, it’s not hard to find big discounts and special offers online. To find out how check out our guide to never paying retail again for Oakleys!
