History
Oakley Juliet Sunglasses were released in 1999, at the height of the X-Metal craze. Jim Jannard was at the helm of Oakley, and starting with the Romeo in 1996, X-Metals began taking over.
This titanium metal alloy material not only produced great-looking sunglasses but also could withstand the weight of a car!
Originally retailing for $275 for the X-Metal / Black Iridium Colorway. Over the next two decades, Oakley would release a variety of colorways for the Juliet.
In 2012, Oakley ultimately discontinued Juliet sunglasses along with the rest of the X-Metals. Today, they are still regarded as one of the most, if not the most, popular X-Metal sunglasses.
Oakley Juliet Sunglasses Overview
Frame and Design
Oakley Juliet sunglasses feature a full-frame design made of durable X-Metal material. This frame builds on the successful Romeo sunglasses with several key enhancements.
First, this frame features Unobtainium earsocks and nosepads to grip your face. These help to provide added grip when wearing the Juliet.
Next, the Juliet features an adjustable frame with temple shocks, interchangeable nosebombs, and flex couplers that help to create the perfect fit.
Weighing between 39 and 44 grams depending on the generation, the Juliet is an average weight compared to other X-Metals. In comparison, metal Romeo sunglasses are slightly heavier, weighing 46 grams.
Finally, one of the most popular features of the Juliet is the iconic O symbol created when folding the sunglasses. You can see this in the image below, where the folded earstems create an Oakley O ellipsis from the front.
Hammerstems
It’s tough to talk about the Juliet without mentioning the iconic “Hammerstem” earstems.
These refer to the unique earstems that feature a bump-out or “hammer” out in the shape.
Oakley produced most Juliet sunglasses with straight earstems similar to what you’d find on the Romeo and other X-Metals. But, the Polished frame featured the hammerstem design that adds a more aggressive styling.
And because these hammerstem sunglasses are rarer, they are also more collectible.
Lenses
Juliet sunglasses feature impact-resistant lenses made of Oakley’s Plutonite lens material. These lenses block 100% of UVA, UVB, and UVC rays.
Plus, Juliet lenses came in some fantastic colors from Oakley. Our favorites include 24K and fire iridium that add a pop of colors.
Juliet lenses measure 54mm x 32mm, giving them plenty of coverage.

Oakley Juliet Review
Now onto our review and why Juliets are so popular.
Initial Impressions
Oakley Juliets are simple, stylish, have a fantastic fit, and just plain look great! When you’re holding these sunglasses, it’s tough not to be impressed.
The metal frame is sturdy and can definitely take some hits! I’ve had my X-Metal Juliet’s for the last decade, and through drops and falls, through bends and what I thought would be breaks – they have stood tall and together (with regular tune-ups)
Along with that sturdiness also comes weight; owners in the past have complained that the Juliet feels substantially heavier than other pairs. But this is all relative.
Compared to a modern O Matter frame such as the Gascan, Juliets will seem heavier since we’re comparing plastic to metal. But personally, I’ve never felt the weight to be burdensome in any way.
On their style, Juliets are distinct, classic, and edgy all at once.
The cuts and rivets add a post-apocalyptic feel distinctive of Oakley in the “Mad scientist era,” but the simple overall design brings them back to reality. And there are few sunglasses that can match the style of Oakley Juliets. The sleek metal frame and bold design make these sunglasses stand out from the crowd. And, despite their edgy appearance, they’re still surprisingly versatile. Whether you’re hitting the beach or hitting the town, these sunglasses have got you covered.

Oakley MUZM Juliets
In March of 2021, Oakley released the MUZM Series 1975 X-Metal Edition Sunglasses set, including an all-new Juliet frame.
Unlike the original Juliet sunglasses, the MUZM Juliet is actually 3-D printed.
The frame still is made of a similarly strong but lightweight titanium alloy, but gone are the days of X-Metal production. Now it can be created using a 3-D printed technique.
MUZM Series Juliet sunglasses also include upgraded interchangeable flex couplings and Unobtainium nose pieces.
Oakley also included Prizm Black Polarized lenses in the new Juliets – the first X-Metals ever with Prizm lenses.

How to Change Juliet Lenses?
You can easily remove and change Oakley Juliet lenses by following the 4 easy steps below:
- Flip your sunglasses upside down and find the screw holes located near the outside edge of the lens
- Using a T6 Torx screwdriver, loosen the screws until you can release the lenses (you can also remove the screw completely to make it easier)
- Remove the lens, and insert your new lenses into the sockets
- Finally, Re-insert or tighten the frame screws to secure the new lens in the frame

While Oakley no longer sells Juliet replacement parts, you can still buy replacement rubber ear grips, nosebombs, and flex couplers from aftermarket sites.

Yes, Oakley Juliet Sunglasses were discontinued in 2012.
In 2011/2012, Oakley began discontinuing most of their X-Metals, to the disappointment of collectors. Since then, we’ve only seen re-releases of some of the frames. Most of which come with very high prices.
