Oakley Lugplate Sunglasses Review
Frame and Design
The Oakley Lugplate features a rimless rectangular design which definitely stands out from the crowd. However, unlike the Kato and Kato X, the Lugplate is not frameless. Instead, it has a C-5 metal upper frame sitting behind the single lens.
C-5 is the five metal alloy that Oakley uses for most of its metal frames. It’s strong, lightweight, and flexible, allowing it to support the Lugplate while fading into the background.
Attached to that upper frame are clear, adjustable silicone nose pads and O Matter earstems. The frame and stems are connected by a very simple, modern metal hinge held in place by pronounced black lug nuts that sit in the upper front corners of the lens.
The stems are sleek and contoured with an open-center inset icon. There is nothing about this frame that is ordinary. Designated as a performance lifestyle design, the Lugplate is definitely for someone who wants to be noticed.
Size and Dimensions
The Oakley Lugplate is a medium to large size frame with a total width of 135mm and a weight of 29 grams. We’ve included the complete size and dimensions below for reference:
- Frame Width: 135mm
- Lens Width: 60mm
- Lens Height: 46mm
- Bridge: 15mm
- Temple Length: 128mm
- Weight: 29 grams
Lenses
The Oakley Lugplate lenses are not lenses at all, but a single lens. The rectangular double lens look is actually joined at the bridge, meaning the Lugplate lens is cut from a single piece.
The lens shape is rectangular, but with a curve along the inner edge that keeps it from looking boxy. They also feature a keyhole bridge with a small angular shelf at each temple that hosts the lug.
Oakley Lugplate lenses are made of impact-resistant Plutonite material. Plus, like all Oakley lenses offer full UV protection. Additionally, all of the current colorways include Oakley Lugplate Prizm lenses. This is also in line with other recent pairs, like the Style Switch and Spindrift.
Clearly, Prizm lenses will be the new standard in any Oakley lifestyle frames. For more information check out our complete guide to contrast-enhancing Prizm lenses.
Unfortunately, Oakley Prescription or Polarized lenses aren’t currently available for this frame but that may change in the future.
Available Colorways
The Lugplate is currently available in 4 colorways all featuring Prizm lenses. See below for the complete listing and images of the colorways:
- Satin Black / Prizm Grey (Product Link)
- Satin Black / Prizm Black (Product Link)
- Polished Black / Prizm Ruby (Product Link)
- Satin Chrome / Prizm Sapphire (Product Link)
Are Oakley Lugplate Replacement Lenses Available?
Unfortunately due to the unique design of the Lugplate, replacement lenses are not available through Oakley or aftermarket retailers.
However, if you still want to replace your lenses you can find a lens or two for sale on sites like eBay. It appears you can replace the lenses by removing the lugs on each side of the frame (see image below). However, there’s no official word on this. And this is certainly a new style of lens replacement we haven’t seen before.
You’ll definitely want to proceed with caution here. And Instead, if you’re looking for a frame with replacement lenses you’ll want to look at other options like the Sliver or Ejector.
Where to Buy Oakley Lugplate Sunglasses?
Since the Lugplate is a new style, your first stop to buy a pair is likely Oakley or an authorized retailer. Currently, the Lugplate retails for $186 with Prizm lenses. But, if you’re looking to save you’ll want to explore your options.
You can often find new and current Oakley models from 20-30%+ off through aftermarket sites such as our Oakley Forum Exchange and eBay. This includes both new and used pairs based on your preference. Also, be sure you know how to spot fake Oakleys and always be careful. Be sure to check out our guide to Never Pay Retail for Oakleys Again for more information.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the Oakley Lugplate Sunglasses are edgy and modern. While they may not be as popular as the Kato, not every design can be the next Juliets. However, this rimless single-lens design still looks fantastic with the black lugs holding the stems to the frame. The bottom line is if you’re looking for a disruptive and innovative design from Oakley, this is a pair of sunglasses to check out.
