Oakley Monster Dog Sunglasses Review
Frame and Design
Oakley Monster Dog sunglasses feature a bold, thick frame made from O Matter, which makes this frame lightweight and durable. But this is the early version of O Matter, so it is known to get brittle in harsh weather conditions over time. And since this frame was discontinued not long after the new O Matter formula was released, very few pairs feature the updated, more flexible frame material.
In terms of coverage, the frame has a wrap style with a 7.50 base curve for an increased peripheral view along with large lenses. Additionally, the Monster Dog frame has an integrated hinge to make the frame comfortable for larger faces. Plus, you’ll notice the Oakley O’s are true metal icons on the ear stem.
Overall, we love the Monster Dog design, and it’s easy to see why this became a fan favorite, especially for larger faces.
Lenses
Monster Dog lenses are made of Oakley’s patented Plutonite lens material. That means they are light weight, impact resistant, and protect from 100% of UVA, UVB, and UVC harmful rays. Plus, Plutonite meets ANSI industrial standards, though that doesn’t mean these qualify as safety glasses.
For lenses, Oakley offered iridium options and various lens tints to reduce glare. You can see the original colorways listed below, but there are some great color combinations out there!
Monster Dog sunglasses also have Oakley XYZ Optics for optimal clarity. Plus when originally sold, Oakley offered this frame with prescription lenses.

Bottom Line – Our Review
Monster Dogs continue to be a top collectors pair of Oakleys thanks to their fantastic design and wearability. We loved the light-weight construction that still seems substantial and overall comfort especially for people with larger faces.
Monster Dogs and the subsequent Oakley models, the Monster Doggle and Monster Pup, nicely filled a niche for good looking performance sunglasses that fit larger faces. It’s a common need, and Oakley took the lead in offering their customers a quality product that balanced the size with a robust, stylized frame design.
