Oakley Sutro Sunglasses | Review & Guide

The Oakley Sutro Sunglasses are a large and in charge performance lifestyle frame – But are they right for you? Keep reading for our complete Oakley Sutro sunglasses review. Plus everything you need to know before you buy!

And if you’re interested in other Sutro models be sure to check out our full comparison of Sutro vs. Sutro Lite vs. Sutro S.

Release and History

Released in February of 2019, the Oakley Sutro reminds us of the 1980’s large visor sunglasses like the Razor Blades.

Although they are officially labeled a cycling frame, the Sutro is a part of Oakley’s latest collection that merges lifestyle and sports. And given the surge in popularity of vintage 1980’s/90’s looks and the fast shades trend, these definitely have a place in the market.

Even Patrick Mahomes cashed in on the trend and was spotted in the Sutro. Although it’s rumored his teammates heckled him a bit for the flashy design. Keep reading for our complete Oakley Sutro review and whether these sunglasses stand up to the test.

Frame and Design

We got our hands on a pair of black Oakley Sutro sunglasses with Prizm Black lenses. And while this pair definitely isn’t for everyone it does stand out with some awesome features. Keep reading as we break down everything we loved and didn’t about this frame.

Immediately after putting the Sutro you first notice how light it is for its size, thanks to its O Matter frame and thin earstems. The frame features a full-rimmed frame but if you prefer a half-rim design you can check out the Sutro Lite.

The sharp angles on the frame give this frame a modern design. But it’s definitely not for everyone. The large size of the Sutro makes it great for large faces or if you just prefer bigger frames. But other than that and you’ll likely find your face drowning in the size of this frame.

You also won’t find Unobtainium earsocks on this frame, which is a bit surprising considering it’s sold as a cycling frame. But if you’re wearing this as a lifestyle pair you likely won’t miss them.

For more details check out the video below that breaks down every design element of the Sutro. Plus compares this frame to other top cycling sunglasses like the Jawbreaker and Flight Jacket.

Size and Dimensions

Overall the Sutro is a large frame perfect for big and wide heads. However despite the large size, they are still a light feeling frame, helped by the thin ear stems on the glasses.

You can find the complete dimensions of the Sutro below:

  • Frame Width: 135mm
  • Visor Lens Width: 137mm
  • Lens Height: 57mm
  • Bridge: 16mm
  • Temple Length: 140mm

Prizm Lenses

Currently, the Sutro is only available with Prizm Lenses, helping its credibility as a cycling frame. The pair we reviewed had Prizm Black lenses though plenty of other colors are available.

As we’ve covered in our Prizm Lens Guide, these lenses offer superior visibility, contrast, and depth of vision compared with standard lenses. Over the last few years, we’ve seen Oakley continue to push Prizm lenses from sports to lifestyle pairs like the Holbrook.

Overall we love Prizm lenses and they definitely stood up to the hype in the Sutro sunglasses we reviewed. If you’re looking for a casual understated lens, Prizm Black is your best bet. But if you’re looking for a bright colorful lens you’ll want to check out Prizm Jade or Prizm Road.

We’ve included the complete list of Sutro Prizm lenses available below:

Final Thoughts – Are They Worth it?

The Oakley Sutro sunglasses are definitely not for everyone. This is a large and in charge frame. And chances are if you’re rocking these you have the ego or cycling performance to match!

These are the I’m living in the year 2050 while you’re in the year 2020 sunglasses. While they’re built for road cycling, they’re definitely better as a lifestyle frame.

We’d say if these are your style or you’re looking for a large frame then by all means rock them! If you’re looking for a similar design without the visor lens you’ll want to take a look at the Portal and Portal X.

What Sutro Frame Colorways are available?

Now that we’ve covered lenses in the above review, it’s time to pick your frame.

Currently, Oakley sells the Sutro in 8 standard frame colors, with an additional 10 available through the Oakley Custom Program (OCP), where pairs start from $191.00 compared to the standard $166.00.

What’s interesting is not all of the standard colors such as Black Ink and Sky Blue are available through the OCP Program. Oakley seems to have created some delineation between the standard colorways and what the OCP Program is offering so it’s definitely worth looking at both.

See below for the current lineup of frame colors, including both standard and OCP:

  • Black Ink
  • Matte Black (OCP)
  • Matte Carbon
  • Matte Dark Grey
  • Matte Vampirella
  • Matte White
  • Polished Black
  • Sky Blue
  • 80’s Green (OCP)
  • Atomic Orange (OCP)
  • Celeste (OCP)
  • Fog (OCP)
  • Polished Clear (OCP)
  • Polished White (OCP)
  • Redline (OCP)
  • Retina Burn (OCP)
  • Sapphire (OCP)

Are Replacement Oakley Sutro Lenses Available?

Yes, replacement Oakley Sutro lenses are available directly through their website. If you’re looking to save you can also find several aftermarket replacement lenses for more than 50% cheaper than Oakley lenses. For more information check out our complete comparison of Oakley aftermarket lenses.

Once you have your lenses you can easily swap your lenses in 3 easy steps:

  1. Firmly grip your frame and push out the lens starting from the corners
  2. Once you hear a “pop” it means your lens has released
  3. To replace your lens, simply reverse this process and firmly push in the new lens

Are Sutro Prescription Lenses Available?

No, currently the Sutro is not available under Oakley’s prescription sunglasses program. Due to the unique design of the Sutro, you probably will have difficulty finding aftermarket prescription lenses too.

Although lenses can be custom cut, most eye doctors likely won’t be up for the task.

Where to Buy Oakleys?

If you’re fine paying retail, head on over to Oakley.com or Sunglasshut.com, both of which are the primary retail outlets for Oakley’s parent company Luxottica. You’ll usually find the most current colorways available.

But if you’re looking to save, you’ll want to check out aftermarket sites such as the Oakley Forum Sunglasses Exchange or eBay. For more information check out our guide to Never Pay Retail Again for Oakleys.
