Oakley Sylas Sunglasses | Review & Guide

Released in August 2019, the Oakley Sylas sunglasses are growing in popularity as an all-around lifestyle frame built for your everyday. This new style sits alongside some of Oakley’s most popular frames like the Fuel Cell, so we wanted to see how it stands up to the competition.

Keep reading for our full Oakley Sylas review, plus everything to know about these sunglasses before you buy!

Oakley Sylas Sunglasses Review

We reviewed a pair of Black Ink Oakley Sylas sunglasses with Prizm Ruby Polarized lenses (Product link) and they definitely packed a few surprises for us.

Now let’s jump into our review.

First Impression and Design

Starting off, the Sylas features a full-rim, dual-lens design with sharp accent corners to add some flair. This classic frame design reminds us of the Oakley Sliver or Holbrook with a squared-ish lens box.

To be honest our first impression of the Sylas was that it was a fairly generic design. You definitely won’t find the wild styling of the Oakley Over the Top or Kato here.

But that’s the beauty of the Sylas, it’s built to fit in, and over our week wearing this frame, we definitely grew to appreciate its understated style.

Frame and Hat Compatible Earstems

Moving onto the frame, the Sylas is made entirely of lightweight O Matter material. This flexible and durable frame material is made of a patented nylon composite and is pretty standard on most lifestyle Oakleys these days.

But one of the more interesting features of the Sylas frame is what Oakley touts as “Hat compatibility”.

Basically, the earstems of the Sylas become thinner and longer around the ears so they fit cleanly with a hat on thanks to an “increased extended periphery”.

This is a nice feature but seems to be more marketing than anything else since we’ve never had much of a problem in this department.

But, noticeably absent from the Sylas are Unobtainium earsocks. These rubber parts which provide grips are typically found on sports pairs so it’s not too surprising that Oakley avoided them here. But if you’re wearing your Sylas for light sports or activities you may want to opt for a performance lifestyle pair with Unobtainium for extra grip.

Lenses

We reviewed a pair of Sylas sunglasses with Prizm Ruby Polarized Iridium lenses and loved them. We’ve already covered Prizm Ruby lenses in the past so we won’t go into too much detail here. But overall we’d definitely recommend Prizm lenses for your Sylas thanks to their glare reduction and contrast-enhancing features.

And if the intense red color of Prizm Ruby isn’t for you, luckily the Sylas is available in a variety of colorways with Prizm, Prizm Polarized, and HDPolarized lenses. You can also read more about Prizm lenses and how it works in our full guide here.

And like all Oakley lenses, the Sylas features High Definition Optics for superior clarity and color that provide an overall better experience.

Plus if you’re looking for even more lens options, you can customize the Sylas as a part of the Oakley Custom Program.

Final Thoughts – Is the Sylas Worth It?

Yes, the Oakley Sylas sunglasses are worth it if you’re looking for a simple, lightweight frame for all-day comfort.

We tend to love the creative pairs that define Oakley’s eyewear history like the out-of-this-world Mars or Xeus. But we do also recognize that everyday frames and sunglasses have a place in this world. This is where the Sylas seems to fit nicely between the Frogskins and Holbrook in the lifestyle lineup.

And with a retail price starting at $142 this pair is right in the wheelhouse for everyday wear.

If you’re looking for an everyday pair of sunglasses and like the Sylas styling, then this is definitely the right pair for you.
