We review the all new Oakley Wire Tap 2.0 sunglasses and cover why this is the next great wire frame!
Background and History
The Oakley Wire Tap 2.0 Sunglasses first appeared online in late December alongside a flurry of leaked Spring 2021 releases. In addition to the Oakley Savitar and Ejector, the Wire Tap 2.0 marks the third pair of non-O matter frames releasing in the same year. We haven’t seen too much from Oakley in this space lately so it’s definitely exciting to see this new innovative design!
In February 2020, the frame finally released publicly. Keep reading for our review of the Wire Tap 2.0 frame, lens and where you can buy one.
Oakley Wire Tap 2.0 Review
Frame, Design and Size
The Wire Tap 2.0 Sunglasses feature a classic half-rimmed wire frame design made of C5 Alloy. However, the prescription glasses version of the frame is made of titanium. Overall the frame is a classic that reminds us of the Whisker and other wire frames of the past. These frames have never meant to be the disruptive design you’d see in the out of this world Mars or Over The Top. Instead, they’re the Oakley aficionados’ “I need a pair of sunglasses to wear to a wedding” pair like the Half Wire from the early 2000s.
The frame does feature a unique earsocks design. While the earsocks are made of the standard Unobtainium material we’d expect. The surprise is how they wrap around and connect to the temple of the glasses nearby the Oakley O symbol. The earsocks are the standard full wrap-around design so they’ll stay in place without this, but it is an interesting design feature. It looks like earsocks are clearly the next frontier after we already saw an all-new integrated design on the Kato and Kato X.
Lenses
The Wire Tap 2.0 lenses are made of Oakley’s standard Plutonite material and feature XYZ optics. But what really stands out to us is the standard Prizm lenses. We’ve talked about the high-tech Prizm lens technology before but Oakley appears to be rolling the once sport specific pair out to any and all new sunglasses. Not that we’re complaining at all! No word on if we can expect the prescription version of these frames to include the new Prizm Gaming lens.
What Wire Tap 2.0 Colorways are Available?
So far we’ve seen six colorways debut on Oakley’s website. However there are still colorways we anticipate releasing in the coming months.
- Satin Black / Prizm Grey
- Matte Gunmetal / Prizm Black
- Satin Light Steel / Prizm Jade
- Satin Black / Prizm Sapphire
- Pewter / Prizm Daily Polarized
- Satin Lead / Prizm Deep Water Polarized
- Matte Black / Prizm Road Polarized (Unreleased)
Where can you buy the Oakley Wire Tap 2.0?
While we originally expected Wire Tap 2.0 to release in Spring 2021, it appears to have come early. The pair is now available on SunglassHut’s and Oakleys website with the available colorways retailing for $176.
However it’s still unclear when additional colorways will release. Oakley and Luxottica appear to be releasing the Spring ’21 frames in varying steps. We’ve already seen some release on SunglassHut before even appearing on Oakley’s site. Stay tuned for more to come.

Yes, Oakley Wire Tap 2.0 prescription lenses are available through Oakley’s website. You can also order prescription eyeglasses with your local eye doctor.
