Asking for an O.F. buddy due for first one in Feb. šŸ˜‰

Assumptions:-
1. You have kids
2. You like them

There are many ways to raise children.

What are your best parenting tips?

General

- Be the best example you can (@flyer)
- Count to ten, then count again (@flyer)
- Every adult and teen should get training in how to perform choking first aid and CPR for babies and small children (@Dbninc)
- Say what you do and do what you say (@TheStig)
- Don't curse (@TheStig)
- Don't swear (@TheStig)
- Work towards love and cooperation (@drago) and communication (@T I)
- I donā€™t like the idea of hiding stuff or tricking kids. I explain everything Iā€™m doing and why. Iā€™ll calmly answer any questions they have. If they want to have a tantrum or break the rules, fine, now you get punished. Iā€™d cut service and change the wifi password for a month. Then we can start again. (@Dbninc)
- No communication devices ( phone, tablet or computer ) or TVs in the bedroom (@Tidezealot)
- Possess excellent coping skills (@flyer)
- If you say it, mean it. "Stop it or I will send you to your room" means if they don't stop, you send them to their room. Build the trust now. It pays later. (@btw73)
- Sometimes taking care of them means letting them fall, get hurt, and pick themselves up. Applies to all ages. There won't always be a safety net. Teach them to take care of themselves. (@btw73)
- Let them know, no matter what, you still love em. That doesn't mean they get what they want, or that you do it for them. It means you are their parent and always love them.(@btw73)

Infants
- No hot dogs for little ones, not even cut up (@Dbninc)
- Always take spare nappies/change of infant's clothing wherever you go, even if you're not out for long.
- Even babies can stay afloat with minimal training, teach them to deal with falling into a body of water (@Dbninc)
- Have a nappy bag that is checked and topped up frequently prior to leaving the house
- Have regular nap times and try to work activities around them rather than the other way round if possible
- Keep all flat batteries, marbles, magnets, medications away from reach. These things are super dangerous if swallowed
- Keep cot sides well away from anything that could strangle/choke them when they are alone by themselves (e.g. curtain cords/drapes etc)
- Emphasise world-proofing your child rather than child-proofing your home (although you'll have to do some of that) e.g. train them not to go near roads by themselves, go off with strangers, or simple stuff like - touch yours/anyone's remote controls etc
- Always remember, they're way smarter than we give them credit for

Kids
- No social media until 16....especially with girls (@Atticus)
- Donā€™t rescue them from not getting the ā€œ right ā€œ teachers on the first day of school (@Tidezealot)
- The sooner your kid learns to deal with and overcome adversity, the better equipped theyā€™ll be for life (@Tidezealot)
- Decide ahead of time, what reasonable discipline/consequences will be metered out for what issues/"offences". This way, discipline is not "random" and "control" is in the child's hands
- Set/explain reasonable boundaries before going into a difficult situation/playdate
- Do not threaten consequences and NOT follow through
- Spank them (@pjd1234)
- "Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them" (@TheWannaBe, quoting from Proverbs 13:24).

Teenagers
- Don't frustrate them by overly controlling their lives when they have consistently demonstrated responsible choices
- Can't let them be on the phone at all times, but it is an important part of their social network (@NoFair)
- Have a set limit e.g. 8 hrs/day on weekends (@Inkkoonce)
Useful phrases for teenagers -
- "I don't care if that is what happens in Johnny's family. They have their house rules and we have our house rules. Swings and Roundabouts. Sometimes you have advantages that he doesn't have. You live in this family, not his!"
- "We all have to do stuff we don't want to do at times. That's life."
- ā€œThey will have a bad boss, a less than desirable neighbor, a pain in the neck in- law etc.ā€ (@Tidezealot)
- ā€œThe ocean has waves, either surf or drown.ā€ (@Tidezealot)
- When working around the home, make them help you as much as possible EVEN IF MAKES TASKS GO LONGER (@dragonvoi)
- No communication devices ( phone, tablet or computer ) or TVs in the bedroom (@Tidezealot)

Young Adults
- If you feed them theyā€™ll just keep coming around (@Broccoli)
