You are correct. People expected it to be like the Wii or 360. The product was produced quickly enough this time that all the stores had a bunch of them. It was actually easier to go to your regular big box store and buy it in person than preorder and wait for it to be shipped to you.

Last time I was in Best Buy, there was 12 Xbox 1 sitting on the shelf. Local Craigslist has them all over it for 600 and up.
