Is there a way to identify a fake serial # on a Juliet or Penny?

I understand some models have serial numbers and others don't but, how can I be sure that the serial # isn't off? I'm starting to see the differences in screws and such as a tell sign but how can I be sure the number actually matches a pair of shades? Any help would be appreciated.
