the spring hinge is housed within the 'piston' so i would call it functional....

here's a couple pics - the second one showing it in the extended position.
along with the linkage that articulates as the arms open/close it makes for a very nice action...

disclaimer - i would not recommend over extending the spring hinge...

mjt - Great shots, thanks! I figured that's how the hinges worked but couldn't see them that close. I meant the pistons themselves are cosmetic only. The early promo shots of the frames had me initially thinking that they were seriously cool little hydraulics!

i hope you weren't expecting compression/rebound adjustment...
