Oakley Penny Repair Warning UK

Which is worse, the dishonest or the incompetent?
Level pegging! The outcome is the same and @Ben Maidment is left to pick up the pieces.

Just goes to show how useful this forum is for locating good trustworthy people to deal with mods and servicing. I just wish we had people with such knowledge a bit closer to home (UK), it is only the distance and post that concerns me if I had to send them. Not that that is a concern at the moment the X-Metals have maxed out my bank account! :lolsign:

Hi,
I've joined this forum to warn anyone off of a particular website claiming they can fix your loose bridge for Penny's and Juliet's in the UK: Oakley Penny Juliet Bridge Repair

I sent mine away to them and received them back in an absolutely horrible state. I've owned my Penny's for 12 years and looked after them for that time.

While they made the bridge tighter again, their methods have absolutely disgusted me. Seems that they have used a small pair of pliers to pull the nose pins through instead of pushing them. Whilst they have done this they have made an absolute mess of my pins and scratched the bridge itself. The pins don't even sit flush on the bridge any more because the heads are in such a bad state.

I expected to send my glasses away and receive them back in the condition they were in. What they actually did to the flex couplers scares me.

Since receiving them back I have ordered new pins and couplers from Line Gear in the hope another company can correct this "bodge" job.

I apologise to X-Man for not using him as he was the first person to get back to me for this repair, I was just reluctant to ship to the US since I'm in the UK. It's a shame Oakley took over two weeks to e-mail me back since their UK phone number doesn't work. They said they could have fixed the looseness of the bridge for £27.50.

I currently have a Paypal case open with this company that I used so hopefully I'll get my money back but it'll never compensate for the damage done to my beloved Penny's.

I've actually seen worse jobs done these done on the Penny. The Penny is a bit trickier to repair compared to the other X-Metals because of the design of the Nose Bridge and the angle of how the pins are inserted. I've seen some replace the pins at a wrong angle which ends up bulging the nose bridging and deforming them. Although, they've managed to mangle your pins into place...it actually could have been worse.

I appreciate that it could have been a lot worse, however, I expect to receive whatever I send for repair in the same condition or better. You wouldn't expect to have your car repaired, only to receive the vehicle back with a load of dents and scratches!

The point is, I thought this was a reputable company, only to be proved otherwise.

did they ever reply to you?
Are you able to claim against your payment method for your money bck?

No, they never got back to me. Two e-mails were sent that were both ignored.

I opened a Paypal dispute about the same time I started this thread. I would have automatically gotten my money back today if the seller never responded to the dispute. They replied to Paypal last night but I am unable to see their response so now the claim is being dealt with by one of Paypal's "specialists". Unfortunately, I was never given the opportunity to provide photo's of the damage so how Paypal is going to conclude this, is anyone's guess.

That's great to hear! How did you manage to avoid the import charges?

I think a combination of luck and 'uncle Xman' sent me a gift, lol. tbh I've lucked out a couple of times of noting getting stung on the tax, but I guess that's balanced out from all the times I did get hit bad! I've become a sucker for a kickstarter, which when you've backed something for $16 then get stung a fiver to release it from Her Majesty, you gotta feel somewhat violated, lol

You've done well there to avoid it. I always seem to get hit these days more's the pity. I've had many things marked as a gift but still incurred fees. Even in empty boxes and my own property. Ah well ....

The gift exemption only applies up to £36 now Stu. I seem to get hit on pretty much every package now, whereas they used to pass through more often than not.

Ah, thanks Mark, I thought it was up to £50. It's a real bind with the additional fees and almost puts you off purchasing from outside of Europe.
