Would like to get some knowledge input and opinions.
I have two emerald XMetals that are a bit special. @pjd1234, you are excluded from this because it involves two prototypes.:dance2:
I was looking at my Ichiro, emerald slate (this is by far my favorite lens color) I was reading O review and emerald slate is base slate, which on O Review looks light grey but I believe with the light it’s almost a violet. Where emerald is a definite grey.
I noticed that my polished craters and my R2 carbon Emeralds I think are actually different shades of Emerald Slate.
What do you think, (constructive opinions are certainly more appreciated, but you can throw in some forum destructive)?
There is comparison between the Juliets emerald slate, R2, Crater. Seems like the R2 has the deepest shade, the crater a little less and then the Juliet.
The R1 are the Emerald lens.
Sorry my picture skills are lame. Hopefully you can see what I mean. You can see the different shades of the slate from a light violet to a darker one.

all the emeralds look the same looking out and the emerald/slate is lighter because of the base and the iridium coating.

the emeralds have a varying hue which attribute to the different batches. typically, but not always older emeralds have a gold hue.

the variations in hue are also uniform with different emerald slate lenses and almost always the older ones have the golden hue too.

i cant tell the “different shades of slate” because I am just on my phone, but only your ichiros are slate based.

I’m going to disagree with some of that.
Here is a slate base against the grey base of a regular emerald.

You can clearly see the grey base of the emerald R1 and the “ violet” or slate base of the Ichiros.
The two prototypes clearly do not have a grey base. They have the violet or slate base as compared to the ichiros, only darker base. I believe the real way to tell the differences is to look at the base. And clearly the two prototype lenses are slate based and not grey. I’m trying to get some info from the source.

i see what you are saying now, those two bottom ones used a different base with an emerald-like iridium both or one or the other.

I pulled my emerald lenses and they all look like the bottom pairs. the R1s seem to have a weird base that lands in between emerald slate and emerald.

I wonder why my R1's are so much more grey. I will have to check my other emeralds. I think I had my R1's ct from Crosshairs with the paper base curve. But the base is definitely grey compared to the violets. Seems yours all have that violet base. If you check O review under the emerald slate lens, they all mention a violet base appearance with the slate. I will check my other emeralds to see if its grey or violet.
@Chris A Hardaway...any comments.

I think the emerald slates have the nicest fish, comparing mine above you can see how smokey they are vs the R1 emerald. Hmmmm curious.

Keep in mind the base color of Oakley lenses also have variations thru the years. There are many reasons for this including being a prototype to test different base lenses with different colors of iridium, movement from different lens and or raw material suppliers, or changes to differentiate it from similar lenses.

As a example the emerald lenses I have on my X Squared in 2011 is a tad lighter in shade than my Mars Emerald from 2000.

One of the more glaring examples of base lens variations is on the Ruby Clear. The Why 3 has a darker base than something like, say, the Ruby Clear on the Unknown. Similarly the Ruby Clear M Frame and Riddle have a similar darker blue based as the Why 3, while the Ruby Clear Crosshair is lighter and similar to the Unknown. This may be due to it needing to be differentiated from the never-released –Red but I never checked with anyone to see if this was the case.
