@cacatman not sure if this has been covered but: are the orbital rubbers needed for function? Or are they place holder for the gap... thoughts?
Hi bro,
I think they are more just to stop metal on metal contact and to fill in the gap for slight variations in lens size ie cosmetic purposes. If the gap is wide, then visually, it looks weird to not have something plugging the gap. I’ve had pairs that have almost no gap when the lenses are in situ.

I think it probably is. But you never know if something might trump it like Jim J. possibly buying back Oakley to upgrade the X-metal line starting with the Romeo 1 and re-releasing factory lenses in the new colours for old X-metals as well as donating 10 X-metals to every member of O.F. with > 5,000 posts.
