lol @ this thread, but i think it started with OP's query about lube...

anyway, 2nd on the purell/hand sanitizer, but my fail safe trick is purell on the stem and leading hole of the earsock, start placing hte earsock, and hold the earsock with a towel to ensure grip as the purell slicks up your fingers too.

You could always chance it and go without the rubber, but I've heard that can lead to redness and irritation. Gotta be careful who you hang around without rubber too, a couple drinks and some jostling and you'll be paying for it!
