Yeah those are the "rules" but that's like saying the speed limit is 65 on the freeway. Nobody actually follows it and it's rarely enforced becuase it's not seen as problematic to enforce it. eBay is quite aware people have multiple manners in which they sell and give sellers a legitimate out. Including may I add "item is no longer available" which is an option to choose (though what is chosen is a formality at best). Plus there ARE consequences for ending auctions early too much- you drop to a below standard rating and can end up on probation and ultimately suspended. At the end of the day it's at the SELLERS discretion to sell to a buyer including canceling the the sale after close
 
Translation....the auction wasn't over so the rules were violated. Don't list your crap on eBay if you dont wanna pay for using their services.
If they aren't available u want the auction to keep going
