Tags - How Do They Work? What Do They Do?

At the top of new posts, you can add tags.

Does this make the thread easier to find? If something is "tagged" does it make it go to the top of the search list if a key word is mentioned?

Is it the same as if you wrote the "tag" words in the body of the thread anyway?

In the Advances Search, there is a Tab to "Search Tags", so it does have a useful purpose.

I have a question as well... who the hell makes the tags to begin with. I’ve added some then I get some stupid error saying I can’t use said tag. Shouldn’t we be able to make out own tags since we are the buyers/sellers?

They were a feature added a couple of years ago that, like "Batman" said, give another advanced search parameter if you use it.

Personally I think they're worthless. I used to tag my threads with inappropriate content just to see if anyone would notice. Some did (including, once, Jmgarcia) but most did not (or at least moved on without comment).
