Titanium Myths

Oakley's advertisement is probably as good as their products. Consequently, their ads and statements are often directly quoted as fact to backup something or the other. A good example is the Purpose Beyond Reason advertisement video that probably most of y'all know, which has a quite significant nonsense factor. As someone who works w/ Ti, I always thought: ouch, take it with a grain of salt - or maybe a jar full.

Thanks to @Nucchem's excellent chemical analysis we know the X-Metal alloy is by no means special but actually plain old Ti-6Al-4V, which is probably the most common Ti alloy. Ti alloys are no super metals, but they do have their useful applications. The other day I ran across this video which really describes its pros and cons well. It details spot on where its sweet spot actually is and what the difficulties are.
