By doing it yourself, what damage do you risk to your frame? Is it only cosmetic, or worse? I could live with cosmetic on a couple of mine.

Could go either way. If it just slips off and dings the frame, that's most likely just cosmetic.

But if the rivet get jacked up and ultimately the rivet hole is enlarged or distorted, worse...

I would only ever do it if your are confident and even then on a frame that you don't mind damaging like a "practice" frame. But even then I would be hesitant.
