Its a weird design.....you'd think as an engineer you would keep the same rubber throughout the X-metal line. And they almost did.

this design change spares easily 50% (it looks like much more actually) of material to do the same job essentially ... so my guess for the reason is cost optimization at small scale while designing a new model (all other Xmetals have been produced prior to the "5th gen")... also the XS version temple shox are way softer (or more flexible) due to the significant material reduction, which could the reason for the design change as well... IIRC the XS rubber kits where not sold separately, else wise this could also be (partial) reason for the design change as well (to make more money on spare parts ... just like the automotive industry does)
