@ Before A Members Name

I see a lot of people placing an @ before a members handle. Is this to post a link or what? I just have never known why this practice is carried out. Could someone please enlighten an old member who is not at all computer savvy?

If I type @Wally Taylor it gives a link to your handle basically and alerts them you said something about them so they can check.

It's to send an alert to that member that you want them to know

Common practice ,not only here but in other social media as well, to "tag" someone and bring their attention to whatever topic is discussed.
