Is it true that the chronograph function on MM stops after 30 seconds in order to conserve battery life? If yes, is it possible to correct this so the dial at the 6 o'clock position will run beyond the 30 seconds and work as it should?

The chronograph will run until the battery dies and it does use more battery. The only thing that stops running after the first 30 secs is the 1/10th sec bottom dial. After the first 30 secs it will stop at the 0/10th and will advance to the timed 10th of a sec once you stop the chronograph with top button or pause with bottom button..
