sometimes I hate living here......

but then I remember how awesome my job is compared to the cost of living and I forget all about residing in hell.....

So, The Kid has a set of stackable cups she likes to play with in the bathtub. At some point she started pretending they were cupcakes. Then that evolved into pretending to actually make cupcakes...

"Daddy, what's the first ingredient?"

I don't bake at all; never made a cake or cupcakes. But I can guess what goes in them...

"Uh, flour."

"What's the second ingredient?"

"Uh, sugar."

"What's the next ingredient?"

"Uh, butter."

As I list each ingredient, she takes another of the cups and adds it to the stack.

"What's the next ingredient?"

"Uh, eggs."

"What's the next ingredient?"

"Uh, maybe some milk?"

"What's the next ingredient?"

"Well, what flavor do you want?"

"Vanilla!" (She says that flavor every time...)

"Ok, add some vanilla..."

"What's the next ingredient?"

"Well you mix them up and put them in the oven. When they're done you put on frosting. What flavor frosting do you want?"

"Vanilla!" (Again, every time...)

"Okay, put on some vanilla frosting." Another cup is added to the stack...

"What next?"

"Sprinkles!"

She loves sprinkles, and that just happens to match the number of stackable cups exactly...

This has gone on and on, turned into a ritual. Then one day I get the idea, why don't we make some cupcakes for real? Need to do it from scratch, though, except for the frosting, to match the ritual of the stacking cups.

I look up a simple vanilla cupcakes recipe online. To my relief, I actually got the ingredients right! There's also a tsp of salt (negligible) and 2 tsp of baking powder (small portion but very important), and the order you add the ingredients is different, but I can work with that...

So last weekend at the grocery store I pick up the necessary stuff I don't have already (which explains why I was in the baking aisle when that girl asked me about cooking chicken fried steak... ;)). When I get home I give The Kid the news, that we can make them for real next weekend, but only if she's a "good girl" all week...

Works like a charm. All week, whenever she started misbehaving, I would mention the cupcakes, and all resistance would vanish. Then, on Saturday, when she got back from Chinese school, she came up to me and told me what a good girl she'd been all week.

"So what does that mean?"

"It means we get to make cupcakes!!!"

(To be continued on the WOYP thread... ;))

Random grinds my gears- whatever algorithm tapatalk uses to compress pictures for uploading sucks.
