Appraisal: Oakley X-Metal Mars – M Serial (Mxxxxx) – Black Iridium – Employee Issue

Hello everyone,

I’m looking to get an appraisal and possibly sale a pair of Oakley X-Metal Mars sunglasses that I got directly from my dad, who worked at Oakley about 2o-25 years ago.

• Model: Mars X-Metal
• Serial: Mxxxxx (early serialized run)
• Lens: Black Iridium (original)
• Condition: Have had them for 20 years in a glasses bag and tucked in a box. The have a few very small scratches on the lenses and the metal seems a little more raw feeling like they werent polished.. Not sure if that’s normal
• Provenance: These were given to me by my dad during his time working at Oakley — I believe they may have been part of an early employee-issued batch.

I don’t have the original box/coin, just the frame and lenses and an oakley cloth bag

From my research, it looks like serialized Mars models are highly collectible. I’d appreciate any input from the community on current value, and if there’s serious interest, I’d be open to selling here first before taking them to eBay.

If i pay for the premium does that bypass having to wait 14 days as well as bypass needing to post so many post prior? I’m not trying to sell at the moment, I was just told to come here to get better info about them

Never seen a serial with all X’s, should be 0’s and then the number. Unless you edited the number.

I can’t remember if he said they were prototypes or one of the first off the line. Honestly I thought they were ugly so I put them in a box and totally forgot about them. Just found them while unpacking

Yes. The "regular" serial usually has numbers after the letter, not just Xs. As you are saying, it could be an early release for employees.

I didn’t edit any numbers. I know he worked at the old Oakley manufacturing plant out by Carson City, Nevada in the 90’s and early 2000’s.. Not sure if that helps narrow down why the different serial number??

All X metals were produced in that factory starting in the late 90s. It does make sense to be an early employee release.
