Buying Building a collection from scratch.

Hello everyone,

I’m new to the forum and have just bought my membership. I’m learning more about X-Metals every day, and I’d really like to start building a collection of my own.

Please bear with me while I learn. I’m a serious buyer, and I also intend to be an active part of the community and contribute where I can. I really want to do this properly and help keep the appreciation for Oakley alive.

At the moment, I’m looking to collect the Juliet, Penny, Romeo, and Mars, probably in that order. I’m still learning, so I’m not yet fully clear on all the finishes and lens options available, and I’d really appreciate any guidance.

Ideally, I’d like to start with a mint pair of Juliets. A complete set is definitely needed, and a receipt would be a big plus. My goal would be to do the same with the other models over time.

One thing I’m unsure about is whether I should focus on mint pairs and complete sets, or whether it also makes sense to buy good used examples and have them serviced. I’ve heard that even mint pairs can sometimes need tightening or other work. That said, because I want to collect these properly and keep them as heirlooms, I feel like mint may be the better route.

So if anyone has anything for sale, or any advice on how best to approach building a collection, I’d really appreciate it. Happy to pay for shipping. I’ve already been treated very warmly by the community, so I’m putting my faith in you all.

Thanks a lot. I’d really appreciate any help in building my collection and deepening my appreciation for these pieces.

Welcome!

A Juliet is the perfect place to start- right in the middle as far as style/size in the xmetal line.

Have you checked out o-review? handy reference on how deep you want to go in collecting. I've found myself discovering a model, and then going over there and finding dangerously that I could collect all the colors offered (because there are only 4)- and grow my collection from there.

I think collecting what you like and the hunt to see how you get the pairs is the fun part of this voyage. I found that if the price is right, even if I am not collecting that model/coler/line etc. (at least for xmetals) I can keep it, restore/refurb and use for trading/selling in the future to get what I actually want.

Another awesome rule is to set your maximum cash-drop price= xmetal priced at $XXX or lower, BUY IT. lol it worked for me before until I had a pricing matrix in my head. in 2013 that price was $200. so any complete xmetal that has no frame damage under $200 i just bought it.

have fun!
