a lot of these items are only going to increase in value if kept in decent shape, kind off like buying art as a store of wealth.

Yeah, that's not necessarily the case - collectibles shouldn't be considered investments; there are plenty of other investments with better and / or safer returns.

But you never know, maybe it'll work out...

I am not saying it's a great investment strategy by any means, but it's not the same as throwing away money ether. (At least that's what I tell my wife)

I should start offering investment advise...
