You wouldn’t pay that if you already had one. But if you don’t, you might.

Depends what you think you want to pay for rare stuff.

Also, emeralds are rare, too.

Here’s my thinking…

Look at the trending prices of quality x-metals. They’re fluctuant, but slowly creeping up.

How long do you estimate it will be before you see another one? 2-3 years? Maybe more! I had waited 4 years before I found a particular grail piece. And 8 years later, haven’t seen another come up, let alone in the same condition.

Even if you see one later, there’s no guarantee you will be the first in the line, either.

To me, the extra 200 Euro you’re pay, I consider it as 2 years “rent”.

But, as they say, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, so that translates to cash value, too.

All the best!

What would you do? I don't know what to do. It's a piece I could buy in person in my city.

I don't know what to do, he told me €750

Go for it, if you want a complete serialized set, this is actually not that bad of a deal, I’ve seen allot higher prices for ichiro’s

Personally, I would buy it.

But it depends on other factors eg how badly do YOU want it, how much disposable cash do you have, will your wife divorce you if you buy it?

Also, with regards to Oakleys (and most other collectibles), although there are approximate values things are worth, the actual boundaries of price range are less clear than we would prefer.

We all want exact measureable value for our dollar. But collecting “art” isn’t only about getting the best deal. As a casual collector myself, the dollar value is just one of the measurements. Rarity of piece, the journey, how it makes me feel, the pride of ownership, the negotiation process, the connection with the seller (or buyer) all adds to the value of the experience which isn’t just reflected in the price I paid/was paid.

All this to say, be less worried about whether you’re getting a great “deal” dollar wise, right now. As long as you are in the ballpark, you’re good.

The only person who needs to be satisfied with what you bought is YOU!

Having said all that, I think even if you paid 800 Euro, I’d be surprised if these metals don’t keep going up a bit more with time, especially complete sets. I’m sure it will peak, but I don’t see such iconic pieces dropping to 150 euro anytime ever.

Hope this helps! And thanks for the question. It was helpful because it made me reflect a bit more on what is actually going on in my own processing!!
