This story dates back to 2011 when my father saw my new Standard Issue Straight Jackets. He loved the style and matte black frame. Hearing they were harder to get, and typically only available to military and law enforcement, made him like them even more. I gave it to him on the spot and included the case, box, and SI bag. He loved them and wore for the glasses for years.
Fast forward 10 years to 2021 when I was cleaning out his building. I found the SIs hanging on a nail on the wall and COVERED in a thick layer of dust. My heart dropped at the sight. I am very particular and careful with my Oakleys and my father is the complete opposite. I almost threw them in the trash but decided to bring home and clean up. Rubbers were super gross and sticky and lenses were trashed. I washed them off and removed the nose pads and earsocks for a thorough cleaning. No case, box, or SI bag were found.
I left the glasses at the cottage and used them for beaters when cutting the grass, etc. It was nice to have the wrap around coverage of the Straight Jacket when using the whipper snipper and a beater for any activity when I didn't have to worry about damaging sunglasses. They got tossed around and beat up even more. The frame definitely did not look like its matte black glory days and had some shine and "character" marks.
I recently decided they deserved a new life, so I ordered new Ice Iridium lenses from Oakley Canada with my 50% off code. I also have a Custom Straight Jacket I bought from a member of this site years ago, and he shipped it from Hawaii to Canada for me. I decided the Ice lenses looked better in my Custom SJ so swapped the Positive Red lenses from it into the SI. I forgot to order new rubber parts but had a green set of earsocks from a Split Jacket laying around. They are the same length as the Straight Jacket but a little bit thinner. I was able to get them on and now the SI is looking SO MUCH better.
Great to save it after giving it to my father 14 years ago. I ended up ordering another set of new Ice lenses and 2 new sets of black SJ earsocks and nose pads from Oakley so it will live on at least another 14 years. This is far from a rare model, but I thought I would share my little sentimental project.
