Seeking advice about X-metal frames

I am seeking some advice about which Oakley X-Metal Frames to pursue and purchase. I am a sunglasses user much more than a collector. So while the serial number thing is nice insofar as it really helps to establish authenticity it really is not that important to me. What I would like is advice from the X-metal community to help get a good fit and style for a pair of X-Metals. I personally think that a pair of Juliet or Penny would be the ones to get. However, unfortunately I can't just roll up to the nearest Sunglass Hut and try a pair on.

Since I can't I would like to give you guys a list with some of my notes from some of the Oakley I have owned in the past. I am going to omit the Frogskins because they were cheap and I was in high school and I didn't really know much more than "ooooh shiny colored mirrored lenses not many people have something like that."

1) Square Wire 2.0 with spring hinges in pewter and ice polarized lenses. I purchased these new and have worn the heck out of them. I am still refreshing my original pair with nose pads and earsocks and lenses because I love them. I still purchase used frames to wear with new and different colorways because I like the frames so much.

2) Whisker (original) Pewter with black iridium polarized lenses. I thought I would explore a different frame. They worked but I missed the comfort of the Square Wire 2.0 SH. During extended wear (more than one hour) the temples dug in and were rather uncomfortable.

3) Tinfoil Carbon Black Iridium Polarized Lenses. The incorporation of the more exotic carbon fiber material was interesting. These were much more comfortable than the Whiskers. However, those extra light temples came with a cost that was only realized after extended wearing. Namely that all the weight was up in front with the lenses and frame. So I could not bend over with those because they would fall off my face. These would eventually break from falling off my face and breaking at the nosebridge.

4) Conductor 6 OO4106 Lead with Prizm Daily Polarized and Matte Black with Jade Iridium Polarized. So these have a spring hinge and are very comfortable. These are really all day sunglasses. Sometimes even my Square Wire 2.0 SH can pinch my nose a bit.

5) Whisker (OO4141) Satin Chrome with Sapphire Polarized and Matte Black with Prizm Black Polarized. I am really liking these frames too. I have only had one three hour stint in these frames, but I thought that it went as well as my Conductor 6s in terms of comfort.

Anyway, I joined the forum because I am seriously considering getting an X-metal frame. From what I have gathered the only X-metal frame with spring hinges is the Penny, which is unfortunately also the most expensive. I would like some advice on this matter from people in the know, that hopefully own and use some of these other frames because as aforementioned I can't just roll up to the nearest Sunglasses Hut to try a Penny or Juliet and I don't know that there is really a comprehensive diagram showing the measurements of these two frames. Anyway, any help and or advice you could offer me would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I am probably pretty squarely in the medium head range then. As most of the frames are in the medium head size range (SW 2.0 SH, Conductor 6, and Tinfoil Carbon). The new whisker OO4141 and original whisker being in the large range, but the original whisker was uncomfortable to wear for long periods.

(Also further proof that my head is not large is that I never thought I looked good in a pair of M-frames.)

Thank you, I think you have helped me make my decision. Digging in a little deeper, the Penny’s numbers (56x20x144) are very similar to my Beloved SW 2.0 SH (52x19x145) and both have spring hinges, which means that curvature matters less. The Juliet has similar numbers (54x20x140) but has no spring hinges so curvature would matter more.

Well I guess I need to save some nickels, dimes, and quarters to get me a Penny because despite the Yogi Berra's observation that a nickel ain't worth a dime anymore, a Penny still costs a pretty penny these days.

If you loved the Square wires then i think you'll love the Pennys most of the x-metal. Size, shape, comfort are very similar. Particularly with teh spring hinges they don't feel so tight on the head.

Like you say though, they're not cheap out there and there are a **** ton of fakes to navigate. When you have enough posts here you can post a Want to Buy thread on the Exchange pages. Maybe some kind genlteman will part with a pair there have. There are also some Oakley Buy and Sell Groups on Facebook moderated by people on here that can be an option also. I'd recommend always using PayPal G&S as payment though...just in case - Particularly outside of the forum, but even here accidents can happen.

Why not just get both? Ultimately if you decided that it does not fit you, you will definitely be able to sell it unless you got it at inflated price.

I too was in a same situation like you.For a start I had shortlisted Juliet xx and R1 and in the end I gotten all x metal to know what really suit me and you would be surprised that my initial favourite wasn’t my current favourites. My initial selection was based on the style I like but my current selection is based on style, finish, comfort, weight, price, fit and does it require heavy maintenance. Ultimately isn’t this part of the fun while pursuing model that you do not have and know what fit you the best. What we can give you are based on our own experience in what we have but in the end only through your own experience than you know what suit you the best.

My final take is get both. 😀

Let's be honest...once he gets one, the rest will follow 😂

Thanks,
I have a larger head and the Juliets are too small. XX is my next move.

@Bilatron Unfortunately, I can't seem to figure out the whole quote thing, but regardless, your comment is exactly the sort of commentary I was seeking. Thanks!

"If you loved the Square wires then i think you'll love the Pennys most of the x-metal. Size, shape, comfort are very similar. Particularly with teh spring hinges they don't feel so tight on the head."

While you guys might be correct that I will get them all, it would likely only be for fitting reasons. I am far more likely to get the unique colorway combinations of those that best fit and look on me. Consequently, the Mad Man is probably not going to be one that I would wear or purchase. I also have a face that is very oval. So round frames and lenses are very hit and miss. Consequently, I might be denied entry on my shuttle to Mars. Of course if they do complement my face... while it might be a good thing stylistically, RIP my wallet.

But I have been good and have only gotten myself into a new frame class once every five years on average. (that said I will admit to owning multiple styles of a frame class). I think the costs will prevent me from going too overboard. lol

Edited to include a note of thanks.
