As I mentioned in a couple of other posts elsewhere, I spent the weekend in Bemidji, MN. Did any of you watch the first season of Fargo on FX, with Billy Bob Thorton? It was awesome... Anyway, it was supposed to have taken place in Bemidji, but actually it was shot in Canada - the real Bemidji is quite different. And the accents aren't as heavy or as colloquialism-laden, don'tcha know?

There was a scene near the end of the season where Lester is hiding out in his car next to statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. Those statues are Bemidji's main claim to fame, but the ones in Fargo aren't the real ones, and they were too small. The real ones were unveiled in Jan 1937. Paul is 18 feet tall and weighs 2.5 tons. Babe is 10 feet tall by 23 feet long, with a 14 foot span of horns.

Another factoid about Bemidji is it's the first town the Mississippi River goes through after the headwaters. At this point it ain't so Mighty, just a little river you could swim across in a minute or two:
