What Really Grinds Your Gears?

Spending all day fixing computers and network gear and printers for idiots and coming home to my wife asking me to call the cable company and set up the new modem and connect her printer.

In that case, at least you aren't a gynecologist... ;)

I need to stop reading the news. The headlines are always full of death; it's so depressing...

I'd like to read news stories about life. They're there, but my news portal doesn't have a "death" filter...

Sorry to keep harping on a downer topic, but here's what I mean...

I found these eight articles to be of interest today:

Is this stuff we really need to know? Does it affect our daily lives? Or is it just a form of sensationalism that's become so commonplace, we accept it as normal?

I agree. I don't watch TV anymore. It's all commercials and "reality" TV and scripted hollow shows. I like REAL TV. Cop shows, and Sci-Fi, or drama series. All of the "news" is about junk that doesn't matter. Or the latest viral video.

Give me a break.

The only thing I miss is watching hockey games. Next season I'm going to find an online option.

So I get this email from one of my insurance providers last night. I just could not believe my eyes as I was reading it.
We are supposed to get hit with a nice storm over the next 20-30 hours and a few of the words used to describe it are "recordbreaking" and "historic" and "unprecedented".

Anyway.....here is the email.

Before & During the Storm:
• If possible, stay off the roads.
• Have an emergency kit and emergency plan prepared for your family.
• To avoid the threat of frozen pipes in your home, raise the thermostat a few degrees above your normal nighttime setting so the temperature inside exterior walls stays above freezing. If your sink, dishwasher or washing machine is located on an exterior wall, leave the cabinet doors and dishwasher open to increase warm airflow. Let the water drip slowly from faucets to reduce the pressure build-up in the pipes.
After the Storm:
• If you can reach your home's roof safely, use a roof rake to clear the first three to four feet of snow from the roof's edges immediately following the storm. Be careful to avoid any electrical wiring.
• Clear snow away from all downspouts so gutters can properly drain when snow melts.
• If you notice ice dams have formed, try breaking them apart using a roof rake. Be careful not to damage your roof in the process. You can also use a rake to create a channel that allows standing water to safely drain away from your home. Another method for creating a channel for water is to fill a nylon stocking with calcium chloride and place it vertically across melting snow or ice. Avoid using rock salt because it can be harmful to your roof.

Now here is what I like best..... After a BLIZZARD you are suggesting a climb on top of my roof?

I don't know about you guys but doesn't that just seem STUPID?
This is an example of a roof rake: 16-Foot Roof Rake, Model# 96322NT | Roof Rakes| Northern Tool + Equipment

You use it from the ground.

If your house was properly roofed and insulated, you shouldn't ever have to worry about a roof rake or clearing snow from your roof. A well-ventilated and insulated house results in snow staying on your roof longer; a poorly insulated house allows heat to escape, melt the snow, then the snow re-melts causing an ice dam, with melting snow then getting blocked by the ice dam and being forced up under your shingles and causing water damage. If your house gets icicles badly or you see several inches of ice at the bottom of your eaves, clear it the best you can and then get your house properly insulated and ventilated next summer.

When your employer plays the role of mother hen. This grinds everyone's gears at work.

We feel like we are in a prison. The fence went up last year to keep folks from jaywalking. At this point, if someone is foolish to jaywalk on this major street, they deserve what's coming. Also, I hope no one is stupid enough to walk under a gate.
