Oakley Prizm Gaming Lens Review & Guide

Launched in 2020, Oakley Prizm Gaming Lenses are designed to help protect your eyes and improve your game. But do they live up to the hype?

Keep reading for our full Oakley Prizm Gaming lens review. Plus, what frames you can find these lenses in.

What are Oakley Prizm Gaming Lenses?

We’ve already covered Oakley Prizm Lenses which are designed to provide enhanced contrast and performance in sports. Now Oakley has extended this to e-sports with Prizm Gaming lenses and glasses.

The gaming line is designed to provide several key features we’ll deep dive into below:

Features

  • Enhanced color contrast – Darker black and lighter whites across the color spectrum to avoid straining your eyes when gaming
  • Sharper vision – Clear crisp picture through the lenses to avoid eye strain
  • Blue light filtering – 40% reduction of High Energy Visible (HEV) light between 380 and 500nm along with standard UV blocking
  • Reduced eye fatigue – Accomplished through the features above to protect your eyes during hours of screen time
  • Headset compatible frames – Compatibility with common gaming headsets to avoid discomfort

Oakley Prizm Gaming lenses are purpose-built to protect and avoid straining your eyes while staring at a screen.

Pro gamers (and plenty of people at home) spend hours in front of their TV or computer monitor on the latest game.

That time staring at your screen can often lead to headaches and fatigue typically caused by two factors that the Prizm Gaming lens wants to solve.

First, the focus on tiny details in video games – the ball in Madden, a hidden player in Call of Duty. The high resolution of modern games means we are constantly looking for the tiniest details, and this over time wears on our eyes.

The second cause of strain is High Energy Visible (HEV) light or Blue light. You’ve probably heard of this before, but most people don’t truly understand what it is or how it affects you.

Scroll down to the next section to understand exactly why blue light should matter to you.

What is High Energy Visible (HEV) or Blue light?

High Energy Visible (HEV) light or Blue light naturally occurs in our world today. On the light spectrum, it’s the highest energy and shortest wavelength light.

It’s actually a close cousin to Ultra Violet light on the spectrum in the sense that it is essentially undetectable.

We don’t notice “blue light” on our computer or television screens, but it is there. And similar to UV waves, they aren’t exactly the best for your eyes.

Because of the short wavelength / high energy combination of HEV, it means they emit less of a constant amount of light to our eyes.

Think of it like a tiny flicker occurring so rapidly you never even notice. But the truth is, your eyes are noticing.

Over hours and hours of screen time, your head begins throbbing, and your eyes want to close. That’s the flickering HEV rays.

This is where the Oakley Prizm Gaming Lenses come in. The ability to reduce 40% of these HEV light rays is a huge improvement when you add up the hours of screen time.

Prizm Gaming Lens Review – Are They Worth It?

This Prizm Gaming lens review will definitely bring a debate of whether they truly work or not. But similar to the sport-based Prizm lenses, it’s really based on preference.

For the shortest answer – Can you see a difference with Oakley Prizm Gaming lenses? Yes.

Will it necessarily make you any better of those video games you curse at every night? Probably not.

The truth is, the Prizm Gaming glasses do just about everything Oakley says they will. Check out the picture below, which highlights really well the reduction in glare and increase in contrast of the computer screen.

As you’d imagine, the reduction in blue light is very difficult to prove. However, these improvements in glare and contrast will already reduce the strain on your eyes.

Available Oakley Prizm Gaming Glasses

Currently, Oakley Prizm Gaming lenses are only available in Prescription Oakley Eyeglasses.

It’s actually surprising Oakley hasn’t capitalized on this technology with non-RX pairs of Prizm Gaming glasses. Especially given the high cost of prescription frames/lenses.

In a rare turn of events, it’s the non-RX crowd who’s out of luck here. Unfortunately, for the time being, if you don’t wear prescription glasses, you can’t get in on Prizm Gaming.

But if you are interested in Prescription Oakley Prizm Gaming glasses, we’ve included a listing of the available frames below.

You can also check out the Oakley site for the latest gaming glasses here. For more complete details on the ordering process, head over to our complete guide on Prescription Oakleys.
