Today's my 42nd birthday, and my driver's license needed to be renewed.
For the last 15 years or so, whenever my driver's license expired they'd just mail me a new one. Very convenient, though my pic was getting really out-of-date...
But not this time, had to go in to renew. I've had perfect vision all my life, but the last year or two it's started to suffer a little bit; I otherwise see fine but have been having trouble focusing on text a certain distance away... just part of getting older.
And they always give you an eye test when you renew in person. And I really don't want to get saddled with a corrective lenses requirement.
So, I put it off as long as I could, been doing eye exercises (though those really aren't supposed to work). Couldn't wait any longer, went in today and waited for my turn.
And sure enough, eye test. "Read line five." there's three sets of letters, the left testing the left eye, the middle testing both (stereo), and the right testing the right eye. I can see the stuff in the center fine but the individual eye stuff is blurry, I can't make out the left side at all. Brief moment of minor panic.
Then I concentrate for a second and it comes into focus. Not perfectly but enough that I have no doubt about any of the letters. So I quickly rattle off all three sets while I still have it locked in.
PASS! Whew....
I should be able to renew by mail again next time before having to go back in the time after that. We'll cross that bridge when we get there...
