It's not impossible to match Oakley's quality, but we just haven't seen it proven. It's not like Oakley is manufacturing lenses at Area 51 with a captive alien applying its intergalactic optical superpowers.
If memory serves right, someone did test the Fuse+ lenses on a projector. Never confirmed which slide was OEM and which was Fuse, but like not one could tell the difference. I think someone also did Revant's HC3 as well, but the demonstration was never shown publicly. Walleva's Mr.Shield objectively had nice optical testing results. At the time I was the only one to see the results. Recommended they find a way to showcase it because quite frankly that's the leading selling point of such lenses, and right now the link on their website isn't working.
If there was an area where I think Oakley still has a legit edge, I'd say it's effective tinting with colored mirror finishes. Prizm especially. Pretty much everyone else prioritizes the aesthetic of the mirror coat over the functionality of the resulting tint.
I can tell you the standard Revant lenses are very poor quality. Not even close to OEM. The optics I've seen and polarization seems questionable and less effective, material's durability seems questionable at best. Their manufacturing process on the elite line looks promising. Of course I won't try them, like Frank said, no need to. You all should know why. I love the Oakley OEM. If treated properly they can last year's. I simply wish Oakley would add that stealth backside A/R coating to at least the prizm line. How cool would that be too have a Maui Jim Killer?!
Then again many don't like the smudgy nature of anti glare coatings in outdoor active settings.
I am always amazed by the vitriol in these discussions. I have been collecting Oakleys since... Well probably before some people on this forum were even born. I still use my original Black Iridium and Positive Iridium Heater lenses purchased in the early 90's and can honestly say that well cared for Oakley lenses seem to last forever. Yes, both those lenses show signs of wear but amazingly they are still usable. That said, finding OEM replacement lenses for either my M Frames (Heaters) or my Fast Jackets (XL) has become next to impossible. So my solution has been to try a variety of after market lenses.
Revant lenses have been among those I have tried and I have to say that they have been ok for me. Unfortunately Revant and (as far as I can tell) no after market lens manufacturer makes a premium line of replacement shield lenses. So I am stuck with what Revant calls their "enhanced" lenses for my M Frame. Enhanced in this context means (I think) polarization and perhaps a better anti-scratch hard coat. Enhanced lenses are not the same thickness as Oakley and are not (IMHO) as good. They work and, unlike some others I have tried, seem to be somewhat superior in the optical department (to other non-OEM lenses NOT to Oakley lenses) for example less lens flare. I still prefer my original OEM lenses but at least I still have options now that Oakley no longer offers Heater lenses.
Whenever these discussions start there are some that say "Revant is OK" others that respond "Revant lenses suck and I threw mine in the trash". Well, it would be useful if one were to include which particular Revant lens they are referring to. Revant makes three different lenses for the Fast Jacket XL. They make a base lens, an Enhanced lens, and an Elite lens. I will not use either the base or enhanced lenses for my Fast Jackets. The Enhanced lens is way too thin and does not come anywhere close to an OEM lens. The Base lens appears to actually have a better fit than the Enhanced lens when it comes to thickness but it does not hold up well from my experience. The Elite/HC3 lenses appear to be a different story. I have been using some of these for over a year and they are a near perfect fit (including correct thickness), hold up well, and may even be a little tougher than OEM. Since I am not about to do a "scratch test" on any of my lenses I can't swear to the last but will say that I don't have a single scratch that I can see on any of my Revant lenses and I am ridiculously picky (I am also ridiculously careful but accidents do happen). Unfortunately I can't say the same for my Oakley lenses. Would I use Revant Elite lenses if I could still get OEM for my Fast Jackets? Maybe, at least for tints that Oakley does not offer. Are they better than OEM lenses? I am not an optics expert so I can't say one way or the other and offer technical details to back up my claim but just using my Mark I eyeball I would NOT say they are better. On the other hand I would NOT say that they are worse either. I wish someone would test them and let us know. If I could get PRIZM lenses for my Fast Jackets would I use those instead? Probably, but I can't. More's the pity.
Just to repeat, could people please let us know which Revant lenses they are referring to when raving/ranting about them?
