Tudor Ranger 39mm

Those TAG Heuer Monzas are a remake of a 1930s cushion chrono rather than the actual Monza. The 70s Monza used the same case as the second generation Carrera but in base metal with either chrome or black finishing. So less of a reissue than the Carrera or Monaco - the first Autavias of the later era used a case that was different from any of the early watches too.
Thanks for the info.

Definitely an unsung hero.

I heard the only reason it wasn't in Le Mans is because the prop guy only had one, but they had 3 Monacos.
The film was released about five or six years before the first Heuer Monza! They had Carreras and Autavias to choose from but opted for the Monaco (which hadn’t been a big seller) so the film gave it a publicity push.

Here’s the relevant page from Jack Heuer’s autobiography (the released copy, I have a pre-print part-manuscript copy too that I got from an earlier visit to TAG Heuer). It’s right that the Monaco was chosen because it was the only one they had three of, but they wouldn’t have had any Monzas at the time. Steve McQueen wanted to look just like Derek Bell, who famously (amongst Heuer collectors at least) wore an Autavia, but they didn’t have three identical Autavias to use.
