What Defines True Luxury in Men’s Sunglasses?

Hello everyone.

I’ve been exploring the world of men’s luxury sunglasses and wanted to hear insights from others who have experience in this space. Beyond brand names and price tags, what truly defines luxury in sunglasses for men?

Is it the craftsmanship, materials like acetate or titanium, lens technology, or the heritage behind the brand? I’m also curious how much weight people place on design versus functionality, such as UV protection and comfort for long wear.

Are there specific brands or models you feel consistently deliver value and longevity?

Looking forward to learning from different perspectives and recommendations.

Welcome to the forum! The question might seem a bit out-of-context here as most of us do not regard Oakley as a 'luxury' brand. What draws people to Oakley is the unconventional design language, immense potential for customization and nostalgic recall. People who collect them, do not do so for premiumness or luxury. Just my opinion.

I'd define a "luxury" pair of sunglasses as anything made with genuinely premium materials. The term itself is misleading, it implies a correlation between price and quality that often doesn't exist. For most people, sunglasses serve a basic purpose. The more informed buyer does a bit of research, realizes this, and usually ends up with a pair of Oakleys, skipping the theatrics altogether! 😉

I would consider luxury sunglasses to be anything that comes out of Brazil!

Maui Jim has an option where you can design it the way you want, totals about $600 if you go all the way with the customizations.

Wiley X has a similar thing for their WX-Yakl, which I would be more likely to purchase for a few reasons:

The military use them, not just in the U.S., but anywhere that the U.S. military does joint-venture operations. You might be shocked at how big the Wiley-X market is in South-East Asia.

They are ANSI rated for impact-resistance, & some models are even Ballistically rated.

Veteran-Founded & Veteran-Operated

My Wiley-X Valor are actually easier to change the lens in than any of my Oakley.
They are very pliable, rubberized plastic.

I use a set of DVX (Wiley X affordable models) as outdoor safety glasses.

Maui Jim, Hobie, & Body Glove are for surfers, so I find it odd that they do not seem to care about impact-resistance. Look at some of the M.J. designs, a stiff breeze would break some of them.

I only mention Hobie, because they make a line of models that Float, which is super-important when they are going to get knocked into the water.

Maui Jim, those suckers SINK & FAST!

I guess it depends greatly on how one defines Luxury.
If the user is just going to use them while driving or doing in-active tasks where there is no risk of impact or falling off, then Maui Jim for the win, because without any doubt, they have The Best Clarity of any other brand.

I love my M.J. World Cup, but I am an over-thinker, & the High-Contrast Bronze GLASS lens makes me think about what happens in an impact.

What I would like to have is a Maui Jim MauiBrilliant MauiRose lens, but that will have to wait for another day. Most of their models I find unwearable for me. An irony there, they make them in Hawaii, which is populated with Polynesian people.
yet they do not really market that much for an Asian fit or Universal fit

I contacted them about the fact that the World Cup rides my cheeks, their suggestion was to buy a new pair!
Costa Fantail, same story, but at least Costa gave me a 50% off code for the next purchase.

One thing I find sort of luxurious about M.J. is that they will replace your lens for only $100, but you have to pay the postage of your frames to them.

So, if you picked up a pair of M.J. frames with busted or scratched lens, just ship them off for new ones.
Costa, you can buy the lens in the Customer Portal & install them yourself.

Out in the desert, a nice pair of Flak 2 with Tungsten lens is a luxury.

Rēvo are great & underrated, in my experience.
The Clarity is about as good as Costa, but not quite to Maui Jim level.
but be careful to get their PolyAmide (Nylon) lens
