Bill Russell's career averages outside of rebounding and blocks: (Blocks were not recorded anyway)
15 PPG / 4.3 APG / .561 FT% / .440 FG% (!!!) - on an average of over 42 minutes per game.
So you're telling me Bill Russell is the GOAT Center, huh? He'd struggle finding a job today if he shot 44% from the field, like he did his entire career.
This is dreadful for any big... especially one who generated almost all of his shots from offensive rebounds or fast breaks after a block.
This woeful percentage helped contribute to his solid but unremarkable career average of about 15 PPG.
He was a FT Shooter on par with Shaq, DeAndre Jordan, Dwight Howard, or any other comically uncoordinated big from recent memory who is/was crucified for having such a 'glaring weakness' in his game.
Not a bad passer at all, but I would wager that his APG numbers were inflated by the fact that he played OVER 42 MINUTES PER GAME against mediocre competition in an era where the pace of the game was so much higher.
He was truly needed on Defense, taking advantage of his great size advantage over small dudes, and his great mobility advantage over big dudes.
He was a stalwart, blocking more shots than we'll ever know, and being the only guy to hold multiple rebounding records whose name isn't Wilt.
NEWS FLASH:
Bill Russell played in a time where the competition was simply not there.
10 teams in the league.
Mostly smaller, less athletic, more poorly-trained players.
No international megastars making the journey to the U.S. for the highest level of competition.
No 19 year-old superstars training their whole lives just to be taken 8th in the draft behind even better talent.
Bill Russell was a marginally talented huge black dude in a league mostly devoid of other huge black dudes. He was surrounded by other elite (for the time) talent in the first and only run of such dominance any organization has ever put together.
Bill Russell was extremely lucky to be where he was and I'm not sure he wins any titles if he's not on the Celtics.
Bill Russell is great. Just not the greatest.
He would not have had nearly the level of success attributed to him had he played in the 80s, 90s, 00s, or 10s.
This is my opinion that is based on facts.
Please leave him out of your top 10 GOAT List.
