Last time I priced car rentals (couple years ago) it was around $300 for a week, so that'd be like $1200ish. Could easily stay in a trashy hotel for less than that.That's a thought too. But renting a car here for the month is still more than that.
Stay in a trashy hotel here and you're very likely to end up buying more cream to get rid of something you caught or having to visit the doctor.

I had to do an extended rental once - they usually max it out at a month. You can rent it longer, but they'll want you to bring it back by after a month. I guess just to make sure you actually still have it and it's still in the proper condition.

It's more than that here too. But fairly close if you don't live in a mansion. Property taxes are expensive
