SpecialAdvisor’s Mad Labs - Mars Leather Mods Plus

By Jove! I think he's got it 😏.

I'm starting to wonder if this might not be a viable way to decoratively wrap a pair of standard Mars as well. Adhere a thin leather veneer to Matte Black Gaffers Tape which is clearly flexible enough and can be put on and taken off without leaving adhesive...I mean it's been used in the film industry for that very reason for ages. As long as the combo of leather and gaffers tape isnt too thick....Hmm 🤔

Leather test is next! We shall see....🪖👍

I threw caution to the wind and dove straight in to the deep end of the pool. Tobacco buckskin from the same hide as my favorite vest. Luckily I have a good chunk left…🪖🦌👍

After playing with various exotics 🦈🦬🐗🐂🐃🐐, at the end of the day it is likely what I’d leave on this frame for the long haul anyway 🪖👍

Heh…yup. Tobacco Buckskin wrapped Bloody Juliet’s 😏🤙

Full disclosure…it’s a full on “Monet” but looks cool from normal viewing distance. I did rush thru it before heading out the door this AM before errands. Still solid proof of concept.

I’m a-gonna post a WOAYWT with it here in a few with no comment and see if anyone notices 😎

Now bear in mind this was a serious WAG (Wild Ass Guess). I took the existing MARS template and cut out another hunk of buckskin. Looked like the MARS nosebridge was a shade wider and fractionally shorter than the Juliet nosebridge...at least that's how it ended up looking once I got the leather on the Juliets...I made this first one a bit longer but did not trim the sides enough. I'll take this one off and trim out the oculars a bit for a cleaner look. Theoretically that could be done a couple times before the adhesive starts to get weak. Then one could always use "Badge Magic" or something similar and still get additional use. 🪖👍

Busy week...still no time to engage on the stitching for the Craters. But a few minutes to play with the Juliet nosebridge.

First thing, I think the buckskin is too thick...I'd definitely stick to thinner leather either way. Probably croc, stingray, and maybe ostrich. Another option is to compress the thicker stuff before template cutting...more experiments needed. I also noted...a much higher contrast color makes more sense. This color kinda blended into the frame too much to my eye.

So in this case I took the leather off the frame...absolutely no residue left on the frames so that is a check. I trimmed back the oculars a bit and also that little tab that looks like an eyebrow. Also a bit from the inside base of the ocular. Trying to get the general shape down before carving out the thinnest piece of croc I've got.

If you're diving into 3D modeling and template stamps, it's going to be a learning process, and as Cher said, sometimes things look great from a distance but take a closer look to see the magic. Don't hesitate to share your progress with pics; it's always fun to see the creative process in action.

Ive been doing 3D modeling for years and years. What I’m relatively new to is leather. I’m still working toward this project just been busy with Halloween events…and the stitching part is going to be the real challenge as I’ve not done all that much.

But to derail my own thread a moment or two (still think I need to change the name of this thread to “Special Advisor’s Mad Labs”). I can turn one of these 3D Stamps out in no time at all if I have a solid clean graphic to start with. Probably half hour in software and maybe three hours on the printer. Course these are all early stage prototypes.

Been playing with Oakley logos till I can get back to this project.

For example…

Full disclosure…the VETERAN Rockers are shaky as I cranked the press down a bit too hard when I stamped em. Luckily veg tanned leather is cheap 😏
