SpecialAdvisor’s Mad Labs - Mars Leather Mods Plus

I’m digging the natural leather with the tan cap look. I can see one of these in my future with the Oakley Standard Issue Skull logo before too long 🪖👍

Alrighty then! I think I am 99.999999 percent done being sidetracked by Oakley Leather Patch Making. I had a Brother ask if I could make a leather patch with the Oakley Elite logo...as I had just acquired a pair of Pit Boss 1's I admit I was intrigued. So this is how it works...

Muchly abbreviated in both time, head scratching, sweat, blood, tears, printer filament and whiskey: I take the original graphic, clean it up a lot in Photoshop, vector trace it in Aspire (a CNC software...don't ask), turn it into a sizable SVG file so I can make it large and crisp at any size, drag that into my 3D modeling software and model it up ( I have all manner of software up to and including ZBrush...but as often as not use TinkerCAD...a free program), mirror it, print it (using Cura and my Ultimaker 2+ Extended 3D printer), clean the printed model up nice and shiny, then stamp it onto Veg-Tan Leather on my JEGs Six-Ton Desktop Press, cut it out (the blood part) and finish or paint it. In this particular case...give or take about 24 hours from Brother's idea to finished battle-rattle 🪖👍

OK...not quite finished...tomorrow I need to Barge some Velcro on the back so it can attach to a Notch Operator Cap...😏

OK...well this is the reason for my weeks of head scratching and procrastination. I keep looking at all the photos of Mars Jordans online and then looking at my Crater and back and forth and back and forth. I kept asking myself how are they achieving this stitching pattern with one line of perforations? I was thinking they used some elaborate stitch pattern that went under the back of the leather on the face side but could see no thread buldge under the leather. Thus I got the Stunt Double to test on. This morning I took off one wing leather and 'tada'..."two" lines of perforations. Now...I'm keeping in mind that the stunt double is definitely not identical...such as the lack of an split at the usual C-Ring location. I searched and searched and could not find a pic of a Mars Jordan with no leather on it. But...if the stunt double is accurate? Then all Craters have one line of perforations and Mars Jordans have two lines of perforations per side? Well...if so time to get creative! Bring on the carpet tape!

P.S. Yes...I did scratch the Carp out of the Stunt Double on the inside getting the leather off...thus I'm glad I ain't initially tinkering with my Crater!

On the up side I have a somewhat clearer (if not cleaner) basis for a template outline. This one has clear perforations (even if one was half off the edge of the leather).

I always thought a Leather Mars was identical to a Crater plus the leather - interesting...
Now bear in mind the top frames in the pics above is the Stunt Double...a/k/a "Replica" so this is unverified information not finally evaluated Intel. I am still searching for a pic of an original Mars Jordan without leather...or someone who can visually verify if there is a second line of wing perforations on an original (or MUZM Mars ;) ...almost hate to invoke that phrase here...)...but yeah...I thought they were supposedly the same as well...and they still may be. The replica has other major differences from the Crater as well. The glaring one the inability to separate the occular to remove a lens.

Hmm...OK. So it appears the 'replica' has a secondary set of perforations not on an original. So going forward I'll just ignore that second line of perforations as they don't exist on the Crater or original Mars Jordan. Many thanks!

Still and all the stitching pattern appears to be bizarre...
