How long do you have to be on a 125?
Here in the states you can get anything you want. Not sure if that a good thing though considering some people I know we're "smart" an went straight to a 1000. Hurt themselves pretty good too

They've just changed the rules over here now. Used to be if you were aged 17-21 you passed your test on a 125 then you were restricted to 33bhp but licence would upgrade automatically to a full unrestricted licence after 2yrs. Unless you were already 21 then you could to what we call direct access meaning you passed your test on a 500 or 600cc bike.

New rules are stupid an utter crap.

17-19yrs old - restricted to a 125cc bike and only a 125 after test. Doesn't upgrade like the old one.

20-23yrs old - restricted to bikes with 47bhp or less.

24+ - direct access can ride any bike.

If you start riding at 17 you have to pass 3 tests until unrestricted licence and you also have to wait 2yrs until the next test.

Sometimes I wish I lived in America!

WOW. Those are serious restrictions! Imagine if you were a 18 year old Motogp rider and had to adhere to those rules?

Rustpot---I ride sport bikes and I would never ever go out without a helmet or full gear top to bottom. I have to say I saw a guy in the ICU once and he was MESSED UP bad, I mean he had broken ribs, a broken leg, something possible ruptured inside an I asked him what happened? He replied to me he got into a bike accident on his Harley making a u-turn and his foot or peg just grazed the ground and he lost it. I asked how fast he was going and it wasn't even 10MPH. Then he asked what happened to me because nothing looked wrong with me at all, I told him I crashed into a guardrail on my back at about 90MPH back first and I walked away from it fine and went to the hospital 5 hours later. His wife was even more pissed at him I think.
I'll never go on a ride without anything, not even a short one. I wouldn't risk it.

I feel like I rambled there.

I've always wanted to get a bike over here in the UK but they just asking so much of you to get on one but just take a few lessons then on to your test.... Pass?... and you can get in to a car thats a 5.5L V8 500 BHP Monster the day pass your car test!!... Somethings not right here

It's personal choice. I don't ride, but I stand behind a person's choice to be an idiot and ride a sportbike in nothing but a t-shirt and jeans. As is all too common.

I hear ya. All too common true, and sucks when they hit the ground:sad:

I ride a 900RR. I started in the late 70's on a 440 SuperSport and have ridden ever since. When I wrecked my XS Eleven in the 80's the last thing that I remember was spinning and the loud POP of the back of the helmet against the pavement as I spun to a stop. I picked the bike up, straightened the bars out between 2 poles and rode home. There are many others, but that was profound enough that I still wear a full face and at least a leather upper. I live in a non-helmet state and I could ride in shorts and flip-flops if I wanted.

I'll be a little hot but not as long as I'm moving - and I don't care who can't see my face when I'm riding.

Helmets and leathers aren't for "if", they're for "when".

I feel like I rambled there.
