Went Japanese Saturday - this is not the place I've been posting recently but somewhere else. Actually it used to be our favorite place; I'd been going there for years, longer than I knew The Wife. We had our first date there, and I later proposed there. Been through a couple ownership changes but pretty much remained the same, great quality and value.

But we moved about five years ago and it was no longer convenient. Then we had the nine-month sushi hiatus when The Wife was preggers with The Other Kid. When we went back, there had been another ownership change and the menu had changed a bit, too - the biggest annoyance was they dropped Escolar.

Technically Escolar is not considered a desirable fish because it contains some indigestible esters that go right through you. But it's delicious as sushi and if you don't eat too much you don't have any problem. And they had this one roll called the cool river roll that was one of our favorites, topped with Escolar.

Anyway, we went back there this Sat, first time since our visit where we discovered the ownership change. Escolar still isn't on the menu, but they had some for whatever reason and the cool river roll was on the special board...

(BTW sorry for crappy pic quality; lighting was low and I wasn't using the flash...)

Some tempura udon soup:

softshell crab tempura - this portion was humongous, like three whole crabs. Tempura batter too heavy though, like was discussed earlier...

It was a decent meal but still not up to the old standards.
